[h=1]Katie Walsh To Ride In Grand National 2016[/h]April 7, 2016/It has just been confirmed that Katie Walsh will be partnering the Willie Mullins trained Ballycasey for Saturday’s Grand National 2016.
Unusually, and despite the recent rain, all 40 horses stood their ground today at the final declaration stage meaning that the likes of Cause Of Causes and 2014 winner Pineau De Re will not make the cut.
2015 winner Many Clouds, also the current race favourite, tops the weights on 11st 10lb as he bids to become the first back-to-back winner since Red Rum in 1973-74 and holding up the rear of the field, at number 40 is The Romford Pele from trainer Rebecca Curtis who also enters O’Faolains Boy.
With four reserves, Bishops Road, owned by Alan Halsall the Aintree Racecourse Director, is the next in line to take a place should any of the existing 40 runners drop out before tomorrow morning at 10am. Knock House is the second reserve and the only other female jockey that could be in the race, Nina Carberry, is booked to partner him, if he gets in.

I can’t wait. My favourite day of the year (horsewise). And thank you for the link to the the Jockey Club UK website in the Cheltenham thread. After living in the US for 19 years and struggling to find a reliable place to watch British horseracing, that website rocks. I watched all the Cheltenham races, just watched the first day at Aintree and I have also caught up with other big races from this year (the King George, the Hennessey etc.) Being able to watch them on my smart tv is also a bonus.

Just realized it should be any day now…thanks for confirming when.

Will have to get tomorrow’s barn plans done early to get home. Hoping it will be shown on OTB since I’ve cut my cable subscription which included TVG/HRTV (and do not have hi-speed internet). Seems likely as when I’ve woken up in the middle of the night before, they have British racing on.

Thanks for the link!

My god, but Douvan is a magnificent looking animal. You can see why trainer Willie Mullins refers to him as a “different species”.

Wow, what a horse. Should be a fun next 4-5 years following this guy.

Rain absolutely pouring down at Aintree right now. Torrential. Will be a bog come post time.

If you thought Thistlecrack’s performance at Cheltenham was impressive, damn what he just did in the Stayers Hurdle at Aintree was out of this world jaw dropping.

That was a cracking rendition of the National.

Rule the World wins to give Michael O’Leary/Gigginstown a unique Gold Cup and Grand National double.

Great to see Mouse Morris train a National winner.

Amazing - first race over fences !
I’d love to take Shutthefrontdoor home though.

Gold Cup/Grand National/ Irish Grand National !

Aaaaand - ALL HOME SAFE!

First WIN over fences.
He has 14 starts and 7 second places over the big fences. But, nice to break your maiden in the National.

Very emotional scenes in the winner’s circle. I don’t I’ve ever seen so many tears after a big race win before.

And let’s not forget 13 year-old Vics Canvas, the 100-1 runner who came third and probably gave his connections just as big a thrill as the winner.

Thanks to Channel 4 for the streaming - TVG only showed the actual race over here.
Commentators on Channel 4 said that every horse was fine - some just very tired with the heavy footing.

Well yeah - that’s what I meant.

Even more impressive considering he went to his knees landing at Bechers the first time and the jockey amazingly managed to stay in the saddle.

You must have watched it on TVG as I did and heard the same “misinformation” from their ami state side commentator, “first time over fences”.

For those checking in this is what the pre-race Guardian had to say about the eventual winner.

[I]Rule The World

Jockey: D Mullins Trainer: MF Morris Age: Nine Weight: 10st 7lb

Yet to win over fences after 13 attempts but no doubt that he has the ability to land a good race. He was second in last year’s Irish National and third in the Kerry National, giving plenty of weight to the front two. Between those efforts, he somehow slipped up on the run to the last in the Galway Plate when seeming to have every chance. Last two efforts have not been as good but midwinter ground might not be his thing. Worth a second look.

Chance: medium
