The “individual” component of the GP and GP Special is only for Freestyle qualification purposes (Where individual medals are awarded). Top 25 riders qualify for GPS, top 15 (13/18? finding conflicting numbers) qualify for freestyle. Top 3 teams (Nations with 3 riders) are awarded medals after the grand-prix special.

Maybe we should simplify it all:
Grand Prix Test = All riders
Grand Prix Special = Top six teams and top individual riders (not a part of a team)
After the above tests are completed, the top three teams (total scores which are three of the best riders from each team) win medals.
Freestyle - top 18 riders (cumulative scores GP and GP Special) ride freestyles. Top three finishers (based only on freestyle results) win medals.
THANK YOU.
Except … what about the Individual Riders riding the Special? Will their scores be figured into the medal awards? What is an Individual Rider from Osh Kosh B’Gosh has an excellent score? Will that person get the bronze/silver/gold over a Team?
I guess that scenario will not happen considering the strength of the teams competing, but COULD it happen if the top 3 teams were not so good? I mean, does it mean that the Individual Riders have no chance at anything tomorrow, and if so, why even ride?
Are there individual awards for riding the GP and the GPS?

In your example, that individual would qualify for the freestyle and teams would still be awarded their respective medals.
Teams in this case are just nations that have 3 or more riders competing. Top 3 scores from that nation are used to calculate team rankings.
And I believe its just top 25 riders from the regular GP qualify for the special, not whether or not their team qualifies. Nations that have 3 or more riders in the Special are eligible for a medal. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
I’m pretty sure that it is all the riders from the top 6 teams PLUS the top eight non-top 6 team/individual riders that go on to the Special. So in this case it should be 31 riders (since the Netherlands is down to 3 riders with the withdrawal of Parzival) and the best 8 of the remaining riders. Some of those could be placed higher than the top 6 team members, but that is how it works for at least this Olympic cycle.
The individuals continue on through the special since it is basically like a semi-final for the individual medal.
Part of the reason for the complicated scoring is that the IOC will not allow multiple medals for the exact same competition. It is why the eventers eligible for individual medals have to do one more show jumping round. If I remember correctly not too long ago they use to run two completely different eventing competitions - but it was too hard/expensive for teams to send athletes/horses to fill both sides.
If I am not remembering correctly, I apologize in advance.

No - individuals can’t win team medals. But they need to complete the GP and GPS in order to qualify for the freestyle, where they can win an individual medal.
After the GPS, they’re going to give out team medals (50% GP and 50% GPS), then the “team” aspect disappears. They make a list of everyone ranked by average score (GP and GPS), and invite the top 18 on the list to compete in in the freestyle for individual medals.

Nope. Top 6 teams move forward in their entirety. In addition, the top 8 people who aren’t on those 6 teams also move forward (regardless of whether they started as part of a team that wasn’t in the top 6, or they started as individuals without a team).

Ah Ok, so Spencer Wilton/Allison Brock will be riding in the special even though they placed outside the top 25 then?
And could Adelinde technically compete?

Which one? I’m watching and counting on reply, and I don’t see it.
People out here mentioned issues. I can’t watch the tests.
Velvet, I think you need to actually watch the tests before commenting that the test shouldn’t score what it scored. You and others can’t rely on the commentary of others and complain about a score. As much as you complain about bias in the sport, consider the internet bias you’re willing to accept and yet accuse the judges of applying some kind of “halo” without even watching the rides.

THANK YOU AGAIN to everyone who has tried so hard to educate me! I do feel a little bit validated with my confusion considering how many others did not have it quite right, either.
I have printed this answer to keep by my computer screen so that I can remember everything while I am watching tomorrow.

Loved Charlotte’s test it’s the harmony between the two that seems so rare in dressage these days. He hardly ever swishes his tail and has such a happy expression on his face. A deserved mark in my opinion.

Livestream has started for the Special. Startlist and times are here: http://rio2016.live.fei.org/Dressage2/startlist

I thought they did great, too. How exciting for the future!
Can we have a moment to acknowledge the person who coughed into the microphone that sounded like a fog horn?
