Steffan awitched to a helmet for the medal ceremony - does he think he might get bucked off in the victory gallop?
If I recall correctly from past events, usually he rides the victory gallop on another horse or not at all–Legolas typically is reactive to a lot of noise.

ETA actually he’s behaving well, so I have no idea. I liked the synchronized passaging the Germans were doing to Beethoven 9!

weren’t they playing Ludwig Von’s [How appropriate] 9th symphony? I loved the Germans running to their supporters and doing what looked to me like a wave

I believe all American riders were wearing helmets. That victory lap can be exciting!

What I don’t get is why they stopped wearing their helmets in competition…

Gutted i didn’t see the victory lap… could have been interesting!!

ETA: or maybe it would be an extended canter.
While I could certainly see someone thinking the medal ceremony is more dangerous than the test (considering what goes in some awards ceremonies at regionals), I suspect the reason is that he is sponsored by GPA.

Yes, Ode to Joy from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Based on Schiller’s poem by the same name. It is a grand and glorious work, and a German anthem of sorts.

One of the german grooms just got head butted by a horse!

I was wondering what happened. Thought maybe someone got kicked.

All 4 British riders wore helmets

All 4 German riders wore top hats.

I did not notice who wore what (in the test itself) for the Americans.

The contrast between the English and the Germans is striking.

Since I’m from Hunter land may I ask another dumb question?
(Did I just hear a groan?)

That wasn’t the question. This is the question:

Can a groom not be at the ingate to polish hoofs and wipe the spittle off the horses chests and legs? Do they want it to stay on the mouth? Does that show that the horse is soft and responsive?

Ok that was three questions, sorry!

I just ask because a hunter would never be sent into the ring without a final dust off and hoof dressing.

they do’t because it DOES show they are soft. The ‘spittle’ comes out during the test. It doesn’t matter!

there are also strict rules in the FEI about who touches the horse and what happens between the warm up ring and the show ring

there are also strict rules in the FEI about who touches the horse and what happens between the warm up ring and the show ring

as stated, the foam / lipstick is considered a desirable sign

Thank you, guys. I figured the FEI was in there somewhere, too.

You’re right that he does usually ride the victory gallop on Rosamunde or tries to avoid it because Legolas is sensitive to sound, but I think he has said in interviews that it’s more about keeping Legolas out of those situations so he stays relaxed in the arena when he goes back in for his next test (i.e., that he doesn’t learn that the arena is a noisy, scary place) than because Legolas misbehaves.

His wife is constantly trying to get him to wear a helmet and he refuses in the show ring, but he does usually wear one at home, so maybe his traditionalism just doesn’t extend to awards ceremonies. But if I had to guess, I’d agree with the person who said Steffen wore a helmet for the awards because he is sponsored by GPA.

Wow.

Hope it is not serious and that the person injured in the car accident will be ok.

Horses do get wiped down before going into the arena. But you see how far it is between where the grooms are and the arena. Some horses drool alot between that point and the arena because the rider is preparing for the test.

Steffens has been switching to a helmet for prize givings for a while- the first time (or one of the 1st) was at 2010 WEG. He did it to honor Courtney King-Dye. I’m not entirely sure why he wears a top hat during the test (aside from tradition), but I know he’s ridden in the same top hat for over 20 years & has admitted to being superstitious about changing things. This was also the case with the shadbelly he wore for many years. As for being sponsored by GPA, the helmet he wore in the prize giving was a KASK, not a GPA.

He also usually warms up in a helmet, just switching to a top hat for the test. (He used to warm up in a baseball cap before switching to his top hat). As for being sponsored by GPA, the helmet he wore today was a KASK, not a GPA.
