Grand Theft Horse

She’s 0-53.

That’s a very odd story in so many ways.

And from NPR sports, no less. I guess everybody wants to kick you when you’re down.

Yeah I was disappointed in NPR for running this. This is not a human interest story–just some random crazy. Not that that justifies stealing a horse. In my opinion, the horse should be rescued from her, not by her.

Yeah there’s another thread on this already.

Article says jury rejected the charge of theft which suggests the trainer had enough of an ownership stake to beat the charge and keep the horse. Article says she had a 20% stake at the start. Perhaps not all the 4 other owners felt so strongly about keeping a $5000 3 year old that failed his first race and then had a stress injury and always had behaviour problems. Perhaps they figured this was a godsend because horse probably was going to be hard to even give away.

It’s only the graphic novel that makes this of general interest. Otherwise it’s a story of mutual craycray at the margins of racing, newbie one horse owner and marginal trainer.

And a box of Crayolas for the graphic novel.

She’s only been in the money once and that was at a Los Al QH meet.

Honestly I am a little torn because I think there has been too much consolidation in the training ranks but then again does everyone need to be a horse trainer?

Here’s the contemporaneous version of the story without all of the current Santa Anita nonsense added by NPR.

It is somewhat more nuanced.

Not if it takes you a year to get the horse to the races.
