Grass Experts: WW-B Dahl Bluestem?

The guy at the Ag Extention office suggested we plant this:

Has anyone planted it? Do horses like it? The Ag guy said horses love it and it’s well adapted to our area/soil.

Just wanted some more opinions since the Ag folks seem to be more versed in cattle info than horse…

Nobody?

I forgot to mention, the ag guy said the grass has a pleasant smell to it that fire ants don’t like… A huge plus to those of us in the south. He claims the fields he’s seen of it are mostly fire ant free…:smiley:

I feed some bluestem but it isn’t a cultivar, it is native prairie. Horses do love it but if the cultivars are anything like the native stuff, you have to watch, because they can get really fat really fast.

I have a lot of King Ranch bluestem and other types of bluestem. Central Texas. It is fine as long as you keep it mowed. When it gets tall and goes to seed, it gets tough (my kind anyway).

Thanks!

Anyone else?

Mlranchtx, I found this old thread while researching b dahl. Did you end up planting it? If so I was wondering how you did with it.

I heard once that bluestem doesn’t tolerate grazing well? Maybe I was mistaken?

I also feed a native bluestem prairie hay, I’ve heard about seeding pastures with it, but always in a mix with other native grasses…
