My mare has Cushings, lives out and is currently wearing a Greenguard muzzle 24/7. She was getting bad rubs from her halter, so I invested in sheepskin halter fuzzies to protect her sensitive face. Now the halter slips off easily, and she is “losing” her halter/muzzle combo daily. Any suggestions for keeping things on?
If your mare has a reasonably long mane and forelock you can braid them together, right over top of the muzzle crown. Secure with a large elastic.
Do you use the strap that goes down the front of the face? I had taken that off at one point and he slipped it so it went back on. I also purchased their neck strap to have on hand if needed but maybe that might help?
“mare collar” around her throatlatch/poll, vetwrapped to the halter. You can use a formal neck strap, or a thin stirrup leather, you can cut a little slice out of it to make it more breakaway if necessary.
This is what we do w bright pink duct tape to make it easy to see if he somehow gets it off (only happened once).
I wrap mine in flannel to prevent rubs. Not as slick and poofy as sheepskin.
If you want to just wrap the halter again, I use duct tape. It’s smooth, doesn’t hold water or dirt, and lasts quite a long time. Yeah, it will leave residue when it finally comes off but it’s probably not too bad to clean off, and these halters get grungy after full time use for 6 months anyway LOL
They have instructions on their site for this
Someone here, I do not remember who it is, had the best photo of how they kept a grazing muzzle on their pony.
It involved what was mentioned above, adding a neck collar and attaching the halter to that.
I also found a strap down the middle of the face kept a greenguard muzzle on a Houdini here. I also used gorilla tape rather than halter fuzzies and found it worked well. But it will muck up the halter so don’t use the heirloom halter for this! I did all this with a break-away halter to be sure the horse could bust out if he got caught on something. He never discovered that weakness in the system.
While it only happened once my gelding got his off and tried unsuccessfully to forcefully rip my mares off as well. She was missing 2 straps, happily eating out of the hanging side
I went with putting his fly mask on over the breakaway halter and making it harder to rub ( or roll) it off.
So far so good.
