Grazing Muzzle Houdini

My Friesian had been wearing the Greenguard grazing muzzle without issue since April …then a few weeks ago he started breaking the straps almost on a daily basis …we tried bailing twine even …now he has figured out how to slip the halter off his head on the fence posts …I tried switching to the Thinline Flexible Filly -same thing…he just gets the entire halter off now …so I’m not sure what to do for this guy since he’s figured out how to just slip it off

Lol once they figure it out once they just keep doing it. You could try a “collar”. Greenguard even has one called Houdini Helper Neck Strap.

I have one we does this. I got a people belt and duct taped it to the crown piece of the halter (bright pink- easily seen) and buckle it like a cribbing strap. It works. You may have to experiment w how tightly you buckle it. His is pretty tight when he has his head up but loosens when he puts his head down to graze. He also wears a thin line muzzle but not their halter.

Ok …yes I just went on the gg website and watched videos using their Houdini kits !

You have to tighten the throatlatch part so it doesn’t fit over the jowls. Especially now that he knows how to get it off it’s gonna have to be tight to break the habit.

I hate muzzle season too :frowning:

Me too …this is such a hassle and constant worry

what halter are you using? If your own, then either get the GG halter, or get a mare collar (or use a thin cheap stirrup leather, or the GG strap, and vetwrap it so the crown piece of the halter, and buckle it snugly enough so it stays behind the jowl.

Velcro strips or zipties hold muzzles to halters very well.

Wouldn’t this keep it from being a breakaway halter if he were to get hung up?

I put the fly mask on over the halter so the halter is harder to get hooked on something and get it off ( been done a few times) So far so good. This time of year with sweat and bugs they seem prone to itchiness and more rubbing.

Leif has too. He’s figured out the three trees with rough bark work great for rubbing things off and won’t even keep a fly mask on now.

I’m going to try a stirrup leather next but I have three muzzles and he gets every stinking one off.

I use a Tough-1 Easy Breathe with its own nylon halter, so not the plastic basket type.
I use the bright duct tape too - on the cheek pieces & “noseband” section of the basket & for the same reason as @NaturallyHappy :smirk:
I’ve learned that if I let the bridle path get long that’s when he gets the muzzle off.
Thinking the buzzed-down path grips the nylon webbing to make rubbing harder.
No trees in my oastures, but mini uses my round fenceposts, as that’s generally where I find the muzzle when he gets it off.

I didn’t use a stirrup leather as I needed a “keeper” to keep the extra material secured.

that’s why a thin cheap stirrup leather can work, you can even cut a notch in it to allow it to break more easily

If it’s a cheap thin leather that I wouldn’t use as a stirrup leather, I have no problem just cutting off the excess length

I have the gg muzzle …I’m thinking of either trying the throat latch or neck collar strap might help since he’s apparently slipping it over his head

We need the keeper because, when he rolls and rubs his head and neck hard, he gets the buckle undone and presto! Halter and muzzle are off. The keeper protects the buckle.

ah, gotcha. I made a “keeper” out of vetwrap, but I can see how that might not work for a rubber like yours
