My pony has to wear a grazing muzzle whenever he goes out in the spring/summer. He is getting a rub on his face… just the hair at this point, but need to do something before it gets worse. Halter fuzzies won’t work. The muzzle does have the soft plastic padding but he needs a little more help. Suggestions?
Proper fit, proper adjustment, and daily cleaning are key. Dried feed/mouth slobber is very abrasive and can cause hair loss even in horses not wearing a muzzle. Make sure to also wash the muzzle too. Another thing we’ve done for some is rotate between a couple of different muzzles, so no single spot develops a bad rub.
If you do a coth or google search, you’ll find several previous discussions that may be helpful to you.
Do a search for a post by me with “muzzle” and “duct tape” and you’ll find pictures I posted about my setup that all but eliminates rubs. Yes, some hair still rubs a bit, but sores are all but eliminated.
Body glide. It is found in sport shops or on line at Amazon, and maybe the drugstore.
Also useful for people, for whom it was developed, and girths, etc.
Thanks everyone! I wrapped it with equifit ankle bands and rolled duct tape around them… ta da! Looks horrible but definitely won’t rub.
