Favorites? I didn’t like the kind that hooks onto halter, it was very heavy, hot and looked hard to breathe in. I’m having trouble finding one with an integrated headstall that fits my horse. An “average” one from Weaver was way too small on my horse who’s always worn an F bridle. I haven’t even seen these in oversized, just “adjustable.”
The Tough 1 Easy Breathe fits my jug head It comes in Large Horse size.
Thanks!
Greenguard with their halter.
I’m a Greenguard fan as well. It costs more but my Haflinger doesn’t get rubs, never objects to having it put on, doesn’t get too hot and heave-y on warm days, and after using it pretty much every day this summer, it looks basically brand new. But it does attach to a halter (your own or the GG one), so doesn’t meet OP’s criteria of “all in one” style.
Greenguard. I bought one this summer and love it. I used to go through a couple of muzzles a year and always had problems with rubs then I bought a Greenguard and haven’t had any problems since. I’m going to buy one of their halters for next spring.
Greenguard hands down. Neither of mine will tolerate anything else. The greenguard they accept, keep on, and can wear without rubs. Of course I put some fleece here and there, and for the big draft x mare, we had to actually cut a piece of the chin side, but these are the best and most well-tolerated muzzles on the market.
Easy Breathe here too. Cheap, stays on, works.
I 5th the Greenguard. It’s by far the lightest muzzle I’ve used. I’ve used probably 6 brands of the traditional muzzles, and while the Easy Breathe was much too small for my horses, I’ve had it in my hands. The GG is lighter by a lot.
Yes, it’s $$. I avoided buying it for several years because of the price. But mine have just finished their 3rd Summer, and still are not close to needing to be replaced. Every other brand has lasted maybe 1.5 seasons. So by the time I have replaced those, I have all but paid for the GG.
Add in the fact that my horses don’t roll their eyes and try to avoid the muzzles anymore is a godsend. They are WAY more breathable than regular muzzles.
My mare would NOT keep a grazing muzzle on! I had a Tough One Easy Breathe and she would remove it almost every day or at least a few times a week. When I was at Equine Affaire in April I ran across the Greenguard. The sales lady practically guaranteed that my horse would wear it so I decided to try it. Since April my mare has had it off maybe three times. She even comes to me to let me put it on her. It’s light weight and has lots of air flow. My gelding, who never loses a muzzle, came up without his muzzle shortly after I bought the one for the mare. I found it in the stall ripped to pieces. I think she told him how nice the GG was and he wanted one for himself. He got it!! LOL I also bought the GG halters but it seems they would work well with a regular halter–just make sure they are breakaway.
I started with my own halter - which works great UNLESS you have a pasture-mate that is a terror. His current field mates did a number on the halter and I ended up getting the GG Halter!
Wow, I never would’ve thought to look at them that GG are that great! Thanks! And if it’s light and breathable, i don’t care if I use my own halter. That takes a lot of the fit question out anyway.
Here’s another question about the GG, now that I’ve looked more closely: does it stay in place ok without using the GG halter with the ring in the center of the nose piece of the halter? It sounds like lots of people use these with their own halters. Thanks!
For that I just wrap the front strap with some electrical tape just below the nose piece of the halter. Keeps it in place fine.
You can rig it with some tape to stay put, or use bailing twine from the nose to the crown to help. Won’t know till you try what mods you need to make!
Definitely just see how it works for your horses. IMHO the biggest benefit of the GG halter would be to support the noseband portion of the halter so it doesn’t sag. BUT, IME it also depends on the fit of your own halters. 3 of mine don’t really sag. 1 does, but not enough for it to really compromise the fit of the muzzle.
It’s also easy to fashion duct tape to keep the front strap from shifting off to the side - you don’t need the $$ GG halter for just that part.
Great! Thank you guys so much! I have one on order and right now we’re muddling through with an icky heavy one, but he does seem to be learning to tolerate it - so hopefully by the time the GG gets here, he’ll really appreciate it!
Yeah, I we did that for a while…I just had other issues that drove me to trying the GG halter
Has anyone had to make the openings more restrictive? I have a determined foodie who eats through an Easy Breathe AND 1" hay net. I covered most of the grazing hole with a coffee lid and used paracord to lace the “breathing” holes to prevent him from snarfing a bale of hay a day. Yes, through a 1" hay net. Paddock mate is a hard keeper so I have to keep the hay out all the time. I like the idea of the Greenguard, but I’m afraid Midnight the Massive would be back at the hay buffet with those large openings :(.
The thing about the GG is there is no middle hole for them to eat out of, like the typical design. This means there’s a lot more lip moving side to side, like during normal grazing, and it’s amazing how restrictive those slots actually are. I don’t see how you can go wrong - if necessary, lay duct tape over the outer edges of the slots.
