Green Hunt Coats

My baby is looking like he’s ready to go to some shows before winter and my dressage coat is too big on me currently. So, it looks like I’m in the market for a new hunt coat. My horse is a bright red bay so I thought maybe a green coat would look nice on him. Of course, I could buy black or navy if needed. But coming from dressage-land UGH, I’d like to finally have some color.

Question is, are green coats already going out of style? Would I be throwing my money away on something I can’t wear in 2 years? Or are they still pretty popular?

Green coats are definitely having a resurgence. If you can find a good one I’d go for it. For a while the hunter green color you remember from the 90s was definitely out, and then green came back in, but in olive shades. Now that there aren’t as many textured wools in those sorts of colors I’m seeing a green more like olden times with a single tone.

That being said, will this be you only coat, and will you be doing any eq? If you’re going to do the eq with any regularity you should really have a navy coat. (Or black. Black used to be “out” but with the growth of technical fabric, black is a very popular color right now.)

If you only have one coat I still think it should be navy. It’s the most classic and can step into all three rings and be 100% appropriate. If you want something that’s for sure going to be in style in 2 years, get navy.

But I’m a 36 year old fuddy duddy. Who currently has like 5 coats. And does the jumpers. In the south. Where we never wear coats. Because jumpers. And 100 degree heat…

^^^^

I 100% agree with this. Navy should be everyone’s first coat. If you are lucky enough to then score a green one at a good price as well, go for it! I say this as someone who 6 hunt coats, and a shad. Please no one tell my husband!

I think these jackets, for the price, are lovely and will look beautiful on your boy. I also believe that green jackets will be in for a few more years. They look special in a sea of navy coats.

I just snagged a nice green Pytchley to use with my Grey. It seems a little smaller than my others and I’m debating on keeping it or sending it back (it fits but it’s a little snug). I think they look sharp and can stand out in a crowd.

I love love love a green coat, and still show in my old wool one as often as I can. But if I were investing in one coat to have for a while? It would be NAVY.

I think you should go for it and get the green. You would most likely be able to get some money back on it by selling it if you aren’t into the color any more or whatever reason.

I have a grey coat for my bay. I had two other grey coats (a charcoal plaid and a light grey plaid) but neither fit very well so I now have just a charcoal one. Traditional but just a bit different from the sea of black and navy

PS…you may want to disregard my opinion since I still wear colored and plaid shirts

Green is everywhere this year…at least on the West coast…both hunter and olive.

I’m seeing purple and burgundy in the jumper ring. Light/royal blue in the hunter ring, too. I guess we’re just rebels out here!

Speaking of purple, Ii just got the horsewear coat in Berry. I’m dying to wear it but it’s been heat index over a hundred every time I’ve shown since I got it. it’s so pretty!!! (In the jumper ring of course!)

Our horse is a bright blood bay and green looks stunning on him. My daughter uses it every show unless she’s doing a classic or eq final. Love green!

LOVE the GREEN!!!

I have this one on my list when I get my chestnut back in the show ring!!

(Lotus color)

I even wear rust breeches  I am older so I am okay with that…

Maybe I’m shallow, but what I’m wearing has a huge impact on my confidence. So, I say go with what you will feel most confident in!

Get the green!! The RJ linked above for $230 is LOVELY – my trainer and barnmate both have it and I’ve been waffling over getting it myself. I think I need to sell one or two first though, since I have 5 and a shad
