My baby is looking like he’s ready to go to some shows before winter and my dressage coat is too big on me currently. So, it looks like I’m in the market for a new hunt coat. My horse is a bright red bay so I thought maybe a green coat would look nice on him. Of course, I could buy black or navy if needed. But coming from dressage-land UGH, I’d like to finally have some color.
Question is, are green coats already going out of style? Would I be throwing my money away on something I can’t wear in 2 years? Or are they still pretty popular?
Green coats are definitely having a resurgence. If you can find a good one I’d go for it. For a while the hunter green color you remember from the 90s was definitely out, and then green came back in, but in olive shades. Now that there aren’t as many textured wools in those sorts of colors I’m seeing a green more like olden times with a single tone.
That being said, will this be you only coat, and will you be doing any eq? If you’re going to do the eq with any regularity you should really have a navy coat. (Or black. Black used to be “out” but with the growth of technical fabric, black is a very popular color right now.)
If you only have one coat I still think it should be navy. It’s the most classic and can step into all three rings and be 100% appropriate. If you want something that’s for sure going to be in style in 2 years, get navy.
But I’m a 36 year old fuddy duddy. Who currently has like 5 coats. And does the jumpers. In the south. Where we never wear coats. Because jumpers. And 100 degree heat…
