I’ve got the traditional muzzle, but the hole seems to be in the wrong spot for my horse’s mouth (maybe it is too small?), so I thought I’d check out the GG.

Love it! My mini-donk refused to eat out of a Best Friends muzzle. He paced, mushed his nose into the ground, and acted generally pathetic. I’m pretty sure he COULD eat because I tried feeding him grass through the hole and sometimes he would then take a mouthful on his own, but he wasn’t happy at all. His wretchedness lasted an entire fall and then winter came and I gave up on muzzling.
In the spring I bought the Greenguard and he ate through it immediately, no drama whatsoever. We’ve had it for a year now and it’s still in great shape. Their customer service is excellent too. I initially bought him the smallest size but it rubbed the sides of his muzzle with use, and they allowed me to exchange it for the next size up even though it wasn’t in new condition anymore. I bought through Amazon and I believe all my communications with them were through there.
Yes it’s expensive but for me it was worth every penny.
Horses find them easy to eat from. I do have one horse who cannot wear it - she’s a draft cross with a big head, and she gets terrible rubs on her chin. If they made an XL size it would be perfect; she liked it much better than the traditional one.
Customer service if you buy off amazon is indeed very good.
Worth a try.
Love and more love, and I’ve tried a LOT of brands of the regular variety. I can’t speak to the Breathe Easy model (is that Tough One?) as the biggest didn’t fit my horses LOL
Nobody gets white-eyed when they see them coming. They are clearly more comfortable. Breathing is much more unobstructed. Rubbing - on mine - is dramatically decreased even from having the typical style wrapped to the hilt in duct tape.
And they weigh so much less - major bonus for hanging off their polls for hours every day.
The only thing I don’t like about the GG muzzle is the price! But the design is leaps and bounds better than anything else out there. I’m definitely glad I spent the money. It’s the only muzzle my fatty mare doesn’t throw all her effort into destroying. It looks like I’ll be unfortunately spending the money again for a matching donkey-sized GG muzzle!
Agree, the price is sort of ridiculous TBH.
I did buy them full price (well, the “discounted” price of $119) from Amazon (I think full retail is in the $150 range), and then Tack of The Day had them again for about $70 and I bought another set because, well, that’s obvious LOL
I’ve not yet regretted them because of everything I said above, and the fact that the regular ones were being “eaten” to the tune of about 1.5/horse/year, so the cost of replacing even the cheaper ones at $40-ish was quickly adding up. Nearly a full grazing season in the Greenguard last year has shown preciously little wear, so if I can get a couple of seasons out of them per horse, the purchase price + the comfort is absolutely worth it.
As well, mine don’t go looking for ways to get these off, which was usually the cause of the normal models being broken.
Did you find that it actually significantly decreases grass intake? To me it looks like it would hardly limit it, but I’ve never seen one in person. I’m currently using the tough 1 easy breathe muzzle for 2 of my horses with success. They eat well with them on, however they will run if I try to put the muzzles on when they’re already out grazing, so they’re clearly not too happy about the situation.
I would gladly shell out the money for the greenguard muzzles if they improved my horses attitudes about muzzles and still cut down grass intake significantly.

I think so. My mare dropped a lot of weight last summer wearing it. It seemed like she could eat a bit more grass than with a traditional small hole muzzle, but nowhere near as much as when she’s unrestricted!

Yes, completely! It definitely limits intake of grass. We have one fat mare who easily porks up. She wore it nonstop for 3 days. It was unbelievable how well she looked! The GG kept her both active non stop and limited the amount of grass she could consume.
Well worth the price! I purchased two, and then purchased a third. Compared to the alternative…keeping horses on dry lots, feeding hay, paying for paddock cleaning…I think they are worth their weight in gold! I’d much rather have horses out being horses, than cooped up in a high maintenance situation. Besides, we have acres and acres of luscious grass, which is FREE!
Well, I’m really glad that the Tough-1 Easy Breathe Grazing Muzzle works for my guy because it is way cheaper. JB, I am surprised it didn’t fit your horses because the XL size fits my gelding with no significant rubbing and he wears a warmblood/draft size bridle.
Wow! I couldn’t even get it ON my big horse LOL
What about rubs? I’m looking to get one for my Arab - who has a kind of funny head shape for bridles and is in between Arab/Cob & Avg Horse sized things (uses a 5" bit tho). Is their safety halter worth it, or just attach to a regular breakaway and add fleece?
I have had very, very few rubs with this. Nothing like the regular muzzles. If rubs happen, the are at the front of the nose, and behind the chin. Usually that just means a little adjusting is needed, either by bending the chin part out a little, or getting a bigger size.
I have never regretted not getting their halter. The only big deal about the halter is the strap coming down the front of the face to keep the muzzle more centered, and you could hack one up yourself if you had to. I’ve never found a need.
Just use your own halter, but I do find that for any muzzles, having a halter with the throat latch piece that will sit behind the jaw is important for anyone who learns how to slide the halter over their ears.
For your horse, I’d get the Horse size.
Thanks JB - I need to find him a safety halter that fits better too. I don’t like how the “small horse” one that I have looks. This is from Aug, but now it seems to be really loose on his nose so maybe it stretched? (forgive the double halter, I had him on a walk prior to this so used the rope halter, but hadn’t taken it off yet)

Halter fit can be such a problem sometimes Horse-sized in one brand is smaller or larger than another brand. I’d get one with an adjustable caveson piece for sure for him, since his muzzle looks small in relation to his overall head size.
Can these muzzles be left on 24/7 and would a fat pony get enough grass to sustain itself? With the Best Friend’s muzzle, I leave them on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours when the pony is on the grass.
I leave mine on (all 4 horses right now) 23x7. They’re off when they come in for breakfast, and so they can get whatever salt they need.
Yes, there’s enough grass to sustain
