Greyhounds apparently run faster

. . . when administered Viagra.. According to this Daily Telegraph article the little blue pill has some amazing properties that go well beyond making life better for aging men. Apparently the Brits are considering making it available OTC.

Can you imagine the excitement this information will draw on the backstretch of numerous tracks. Trainers like D Wayne Lukas can use the pill to improve on their love life, grow their stable’s potted plants to greater heights, and help them stand more erect during TV interviews, amongst other hopefully legal opportunities.

You gotta be kidding!

I just deleted a couple of off colour comments.

Gosh, I first heard of race horses getting it like 10 or more years ago. I assume the consensus is it didn’t make much difference or we would hear more about positives from it.

Was there a scientific study included the Daily Telegraph article?

I apologize. I failed to provide the link which is a syndicated doctor’s column. Check out the first paragraph in which doping Greyhounds is alluded to. Looks like a pretty expensive means of encouraging plants to stand more erect. Obviously, it is a controlled medication here in the USA and I know that studies indicate a connection to melanomas and other cancers in humans. Might be with worth researching for laminitis. Doping a racehorse with Viagra or Cialis is nonsensical, but we often hear of stupidity reigning over racehorse welfare, so I don’t doubt that someone hasn’t given it on the backstretch.

It’s really not surprising at all actually. It’s original use was for cardiac patients.
