Grinding Baby Green

My hors is like this 100% and tbh we’ve never resolved it completely, however getting someone to work on his TMJ worked wonders for this, for the most part, regular Chiro and body work specifically geared towards the TMJ and head.

I found bits like Nathe and HS Duo seemed to be the best with my grinder, I had luck with the Acavallo Sensitive Bit, and things of that sort.

I’ve had my horse 13-14 years. I bought him as a 4/5 year old greenie WB. He’s now 19. He still, on occasion, grinds when he’s bored, displeases, etc. It’s a habit more than anything at this point.

ETA: background

I had some luck with a Beris bit - and maybe a flash noseband at home?

As you already know, pain or anxiety. Pain, you can investigate. Anxiety, sometimes can be reduced by changes in riding or training procedures, schedules and goals, and sometimes it can’t be. Sometimes horses will be anxious or tense about riding and training which is not in error, the anxiety is coming from the horse’s personality itself. Grinding can be associated with concentration, thinking, trying. It is not ALWAYS a sign of a negative situation. Sometimes it’s just a part of his personality coming out. It’s a puzzle that you, as his rider/owner/trainer have to figure out, just how important it is or isn’t in your situation, with your horse.

I have a mare that grinds, mainly if she gets annoyed that you aren’t giving her a treat. She rarely grinds under saddle at all. I have her on Positude, and her grinding has been reduced , but not gone. I might have to put her on Regumate, but since we are not showing, I don’t want to start that yet. She shows no soreness in her back and her bit is just a copper full cheek. I tried softer bits, but she likes this best so far. Grinding under saddle is rare for her. Ps. She also gets over a bale of hay a day, so diet wise, she should be comfortable. Her eyes are very calm and relaxed.
Just wanted to comment on a horse that grinds other times than under saddle

I just wanted to note that my mom has a horse that grinds his teeth but is definitely more related to anxiety than pain. She trail rides almost exclusively and this gelding will grind his teeth f he’s in a large group of riders and feels ‘boxed in’, he prefers to be in the back and has a large personal bubble. He’ll also grind his teeth if he’s asked to cross water which he’s uncertain of, etc. I realize this isn’t super relevant to a HJ BUT thought it was worth noting it may not be pain related… (this horse is 19 now and has and continues to grind his teeth occasionally since he was broke).
