Groin injury--will it ever get better?

I tore a muscle in my groin years ago and rehabbed for a few months and had no problems for about 6 years. For the past 6 months I have (for no known reason) suddenly had variable mild to severe pain in the adductor muscle insertion. Riding is the one and only sport I do that worsens the symptoms. I bike, hike and am quite active and can manage well with most activities (except riding) despite my groin “pull” I have taken about a month off of riding and have seen a physio , done exercises, shock wave therapy and cold laser therapy. I am getting frustrated, it is NOT GETTING BETTER. I am desperate as I can’t really ride with this pain. My physio thinks riding will not make it worse and does not feel massage will be helpful but I remember getting massage treatment the first time this happened to me (and I think it helped).

Has anyone else suffered with this ailment?

Have you had an MRI done, it may be your hip.

X ray was normal. No MRI but it is hard to justify spending thousands for something like this that is not likely a surgical problem.

I agree it may be your hip. I came off during a bad stumble and kind of pogo sticked the landing on one leg. Felt like a groin pull and had pain in the upper thigh muscle. Read somewhere? that could be a sign of hip involvement. It eventually healed but took a long time. I remember it felt like something was pulling loose. It would become less painful after walking awhile but got very painful again after sitting a little while.

Persistent groin injuries are OFTEN labral tears. I just had this repaired–see the thread about it here.

You will need an MRI with intra-articular contrast.

I do think that if a) you’ve been fighting something for a while and b) you’re not quite sure what it is, then an MRI is in order.

Maybe ask your physio what he thinks about it? Or at lease get yourself on a waiting list for one?

Here is a very good presentation on labral tears and repair:

Thanks for all the responses. I am trying to get a referral to a specialist rather than the family doc locum who’s comment was ‘I don’t know much about this’ (and probably didn’t care!) but I have to get a referral for an MRI of any kind and I am in Canada and don’t have a life threatening condition so it will be a long wait to even get into see a specialist. :frowning: I will keep trying of course and hope it is not a labral tear, I does not like sound like an easy thing to deal with.
