Quick help!! I’ve been pondering picking up a young resale project and now see a Groningen filly listed on A kill pen site. 3 yr Mare looks in really quite good shape. Can anyone advise me on this breed and/or registration options?
Oh get her.
PLEASE GO GET HER AND POST!!
Does she have a brand or tattoo?
which auction or rescue is she at?
Can you examine her before auction?
Is there a warm blood breeder near you who has warm blood books to help you identify her?
Here’s some info from the Dutch Groninger Paard Union. Not sure if its helpful. If it is a real Groninger I would get it in a heartbeat – they are the smartest, sweetest, most work-willing horses. They are tremendous all-rounders and were used at the foundation of Dutch sport horse breeding. You can still pretty much tell by type if the cold blooded side of a Dutch horse is Groninger or Gelderlander. The breed almost died out in Holland but they are working on boosting the numbers.
thompson kill pen LA
Not sure about local WB breeders
owners will not share info on Coggins
they only say “ that is what previous owner says she is.”
sellers took down short in hand video which made trot look questionable/off/stringhalt-y
Rats! I was hoping she is really Dutch and that you’d get a good horse.
I found her. Looks like she is still available, and looks (to me) like she has something wrong in her hips or SI.
But at 3 I might take a chance on it that it could be fixed.
However, it looks like they want almost 2k for her
The Angola prison in Louisiana used to breed a number of warmblood crosses every year. I am not sure if they are still, but they were when I was down there in 2013, and people were always coming up with these rando WB crosses that had come out of that program. If I was betting, I would say that that’s where she is from, but the ones I saw who came from there were branded.
It’s tragic for any horse to be in those loathsome kill pens and they should be outlawed! But a young one like her is just horrible. Those people who own that place are just scum and don’t care about animals - just the dollars!
Sorry, but that horse is NOT a Gronigen. She looks like she’s a TB complete with TB flat low heeled hooves, spindly pasterns, long skinny cannon bones, TB hip and croupe, and light bone structure. She could be a TB crossed with something, but it would be shocking if there were any horses in the US who have even a smidge of Gronigen blood. The Gronigen horse is a rare breed. Not many are even bred in europe anymore.
She looks like a WB x TB. Her neck is a bit more wb to me than tb. Could still be a good buy, depending on what is going on in that hip.
It would be interesting to find out the history on that one. She does look WB or WB cross, not a draft cross and not a full TB. She looks very tucked up but is not thin or neglected looking. Except for her long feet she looks like a horse that has been well cared for until just recently when she ended up in this unfortunate circumstance. Probably not a Gronigen though but she might possible be a cross.

Yeah its a Louisiana kill pen, so Angolian Warmblood thing crossed my mind, too. That horse production and sale program, which should be public information, has a known criminal history and then seems to be shrouded in mystery and has disappeared for the record. The prison had a public sale for several years, but was it never transparent about specific stallions or mares used or their identity or their registration or pedigrees. Totally weird.
Who knows? The filly appears to be some sort of warmblood/tb cross to me. She is very nice and in good condition. Wonky in the hind end. Wonder how ended up there. Hope someone gives her a good home and a chance. Some insight on her origins would a real bonus!
Okay interesting. Did not know there was a prison system WB breeding program.
If she is lame or off I would pass and look at something different. My foxtrotter came from Thompson’s. Her coggins papers said Tennessee Walking horse, but she’s clearly a foxtrotter. She’s absolutely lovely. Nice gaits, level headed, throw the kids on, does everything perfectly kind of horse. And super affectionate. Drop her lead rope and go sit on a picnic table and she will graze at the park and i never have to worry about her wandering off. She’s the type of horse many people want because she is totally safe and bomb proof.
I have no history on her. Thompson’s does not want you to know where their horses come from as they draw all fresh coggins and toss any prior paperwork on their horses. They are a smart business because they know if they threaten to ship them, the bleeding hearts of people will pay double what the horses are worth…except when they get a nice horse in and don’t know its value which does happen sometimes.
The problem is you know most of the lame horses ship, probably without being listed.
