Grooms salary

Time may be right to get horses back in my life full time… I used to rub in NJ and some odd work across the nation. I was wondering what the going salary is at the track and farms these days? I am sure there is some variation, but in general? Thanks

In Minnesota - our grooms were paid $110 per horse per week. Plus extras on race day (I can’t remember how much that was) and a percent of first.

$300-400/head

Where? I want that job!

No kidding, sign me up.

I’d even bring my own pitchfork, brushes, and rub rags.

How many can I rub?
My last stop was $125 a head and was rumored to be the best paying gig on the track.

no kidding.

No silly… a month in CA unless you are cheap. My bad $100/week per horse… so if a groom wants to work hard and well, they make decent money.

$15 per horse per day. 1% of all winnings. $20 on race day for bath, spit shine, braids, paddock walk, etc. A lot of the owners also buy a $10 or $5ticket for each groom, exercise rider, assistant, etc whent he horse runs. It’s such a sweet thing to do for them, especially when a long shot comes in.

Well, hasn’t changed much has it!
Thanks for the info guys. I am going to start in the Eventing field first, as I have a love there and haven’t worked it yet. I have ponied mornings, my gelding has done some with babies… I really feel like the world is opening up for me. Been working a “real” job for a while raising kids, now its time for me again.
Miss breathing horse 24/7!

Another curiosity; what’s the going rate for galloping in the mornings these days? (At 42 and with an artificial hip I am in no way prepared to take this on. Just curious).

it varies from place to place…
When I started it was $5… now I get $15 + a percentage as well as assist… depends on the outfit, location, etc…

The grooms at the farm my husband manages get $500 a week and have about 7 head each. They also have housing but it’s really not housing most would want to live in;) Galloping is usually 10-15 if you catchride. At the farm the riders also make $500 a week and ride 6 days.

Are all seven in training? I took extras my last year of actually grooming- wound up with 7 and started to not keep them with the excellence I had when rubbing less. Farm life is different- and some layup types wouldn’t need the same amount of time.
I would prefer the farm life though… I am coming back from working overnights for 11 years and raising kids…kinda like coming out of a cave!

Was anyone around back in the 70’s? I rubbed a great grade/allowence horse on the east coast named Hickory Cap. There were a few favorites over the years, but Hic was such a war horse. He used to get all the brown m&ms.
