I have a pony with little or no heel. I need some advice on how to grow out the heel while using shoes with Borum (sp?) on them. I need to be able to use him all winter so taking off the shoes is not an option.
I had a horse with little heel and lousy feet that stayed shod, and hunting, for 20 years. Number one is a good farrier who can do the best with what God gave him/her to work with. Number two, good nutrition, biotin also worked well for me. He was typically shod with borium only on the back feet- I’ve never put borium on the front in 40+ years of hunting, they learn well to use the traction in the rear, and on the front end it just torques joints more than I think is prudent. He did have snow pads all the way around in winter.
I think it’s harder to do it with shoes (maybe impossible?), I ride barefoot (thus no need for borium) all winter.
How often do you have trims? You need them often (every few weeks) to take the toe back so it’s not pulling on the heel.
Are there other factors, like a thin sole which make you think barefoot is not an option?
I might also suggest finding a new farrier if you’ve been dealing with this problem for some time.
A good supplement (Smart sox to stimulate a good blow flow), and nutrition will go a long way too.
I found that a bit of Reducine rubbed into the heel bulbs with an old toothbrush a couple days a week helped.
Very frequent resets. The heel is growing, it’s just growing forward. You need to keep trimming it back into an upright position and keep backing up the toe until it has a chance to start growing straight downwards.
Someone in another thread mentioned an interesting treatment I had not heard of before. Their farrier used pour in pads but left a thin piece of cardboard between heel and shoe essentially floating the heel like you would to treat a quarter crack but still providing support around it with the pad.

Just curious, what does the Reducine do when rubbed into the heel bulbs?

I was always told that Reducine is an irritant and increases blood flow to that area which in turn can increase growth.
