Genesee Valley Hunt held their Opening Day this past Saturday. Beautiful weather, low 60s, partly cloudy, not too humid. I think I heard there were over 80 horses that started down main street! And the breakfast afterwards was phenomenal, with made-to-order omelets!!
As soon as we got off the street, the hounds picked up the scent and flushed out a fox! I think we ended up with 3 separate foxes, definitely 2 were put to ground. I saw the 2nd fox from 2nd flight, nice looker with a white tipped tail! He took the hounds for a double loop around the Seneca(? I’m still learning all the areas) woods behind the Hartford House before he dove for cover.
My horse I think is really starting to figure this whole “foxhunting thing” out and this is our 2nd season. He was glued to the hound truck while waiting for them to be released, ears pricked and patiently standing in company. Half way through the hunt, he figured out how to “self rate” himself by paying attention to the horse in front of him! He was soo good when we picked up the pace a little and came right back to me when asked, leaving plenty of room in front of us. Still have to work on the Make Way, he was good, but started to get a little antsy with the brambles we were in. We only got to hop over one coop, but I’m not upset, it was a great Opening Day!
Was anyone else there and care to share what they saw?
