H/J Costs in/near Portland, OR

Hi all - potential move to Portland on the horizon, not at the point of looking for recommendations yet, but I was wondering about the average costs of things over there? I can’t find many websites that list board.

I would be looking for someplace that goes to local shows and the occasional “A” show but I wouldn’t need to have the horse in a formal training program - boarding facility with trainers on-site is probably best scenario.

I am wondering about:

Board
Farrier
Vet visit (say, for an abscess or an off horse who maybe was kicked, nothing catastrophic)
1 day ship in local circuit Hunter Jumper show (1 division)
Ship-in “A” show

Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated! Also any insight into if Washington is cheaper (we could potentially do Vancouver).

Thanks!

Vancouver WA generally is cheaper than Portland in terms of buying/renting a home. I believe it is also cheaper for horse expenses. Most of the top hunter jumper barns will be south of Portland though (around Wilsonville). But if you’re only looking to do local A shows, you probably aren’t looking for the super high end barns that are on the road all the time & in Thermal/Coachella/whatever it’s called now all winter.

There are a lot of hunter/jumper barns in the Portland area that could fit this bill. I recently moved to Portland, but have lived all over Oregon.

I’ve only been in full training programs here in Portland, so I’m not sure how much that type of setup would cost for board. I have an excellent farrier and it is just under $300 currently for steel all around and rim pads. We have a great local show venue in Wilsonville (Team Northwest, prize lists for this year are probably still on the website), as well as a few barns that put on USHJA Outreach shows.

Lots of barns meet your needs. Board will range from $400 up through $700, training up through $500/month. Traffic can be a huge issue so choosing a barn needs to take that into account. I live in Washington and drive to Oregon city to ride. It sucks on weeknights. But I love my trainer and barn—great friendly program with a small show series in-barn. Shoeing for plain steel on my mare was $150. Vet costs— annual physicals with shots and split farm call was $250ish last spring. Definitely look at the Team Northwest website for info on A show costs. They also run a ‘local’ level show within their A shows on some weekends which is an affordable option for those who aren’t chasing zone points. A place to see lots of barn options is Flying Changes website. PM if you’d like info on any barns, been around here in the h/j world for a long time!

Pulled up a few past bills to give you some specific costs. My horse was leased out at Calvincrowe’s barn for two years (he loved it, trainer is great, a really lovely operation if anyone is looking in the area!) but now that the lease is up I moved him to one of the bigger show barns. Still using the same vet and farrier, who have worked with my horse since I bought him.

VET (sporthorse-specific)
“Minimal” farm call (which I think means she split it between multiple horses): $20
EEE/WEE/Tet/Flu/Rhino: $50
West Nile: $40
Deworm–Quest Plus: $25
Examination musculoskeletal (had her flex my guy to check if he needed any maintenance): $150
Dorm (for body clipping): $55

FARRIER (very in-demand show horse farrier—he does at least some of John French’s horses)
Steel shoes with pads and equi pack up front: $345 (lol kill me now but at least my old guy is happy)

SHOW FEES
USHJA Outreach show (counts for state association points), 3 classes with day stall: $185
Unrated show (no state association points), 3 classes with day stall: $130
USEF Premier show, single C-rated hunter division haul-in (two days, no schooling rounds): I think $415 if I’m adding it up right?
