Wondering if the less than 150 breeding mares is worldwide, or UK/Europe only? Sad day such a great breed is moved to Critcal status… People are missing out!
I didn’t even realize they were at critical level. That explains why I don’t see them as much anymore 
They are quite athletic and are useful for more then just driving.
That has got to be in the UK only. The breed is popular in the Netherlands, Canada, U.S., Argentina, South Africa and Australia among other places.
This is the Hackney Horse… not including ponies. The Hackney horse is also on the ALBC list in the US as well. http://www.albc-usa.org/cpl/hackneyhorse.html and is listed in critical. And as endangered in Canada http://www.rarebreedscanada.ca/horsebreeds.htm .
Used to be that hackney horse stallions were bred to clyde mares to create commercial crosses - used to be very popular in canada.
we have had a few - bred by Shady Maple Farms - they make wonderful ammie horses.
We also have a few warmblood crosses out of commercial mares - the bone, temperment and work ethic are something that we really like in these crosses.
We have trained many commercial crosses that have gone on to be great riding horses.

I would love a hackney horse, about 15h, that would be totally cool… So reading this sparked some interest and i started searching the sales sites… It is pretty darn sad. I found a couple stallions for sale, several “hackney crosses” that may have well been hackney pony… Some free fairly old mares in CA… but nothing that i could even think of considering.
When i was in arabs, i guess i left that world 12yrs ago now, there were a few hackney’s that were crossing well with the arabs, but then they seemed to sway to the Dutch Harness Horse, which i like too… I’m sure those coming in didnt help the poor hackney horses.
I vividly remember a very neat picture i had (cut from a magazine) as a teen and taped on my wall surrounded by others, of a pair of bay hackney horses with high whites pulling a carriage. It was one of my favorites.
So are there many/any hackney horse breeders left in the US? Where are they?
It is sad. They are neat horses.
http://www.erosarabhacks.com/ has a few purebreds… most of theirs are Arab/Hack crosses though. But not a whole lot anywhere of the Horses. There are quite a few hackney ponies around, but those are different.
There were several Hackneys in the driving class/exhibition at Burghley last year.

I love our hackney pony. I would love to get a hackney horse. That would be spectacular. Such an incredible breed. A shame that they are critical.
And even with being so low in numbers, they still don’t evade abuse…
