Hair loss at the top of the tail bone!

Hi,

My horse has a patch on the top of his tail bone were he has lost his hair! I have been noticing it for a while now! I am using once again MTG and it does not seem to be working! It has happened before but then it went away! Any suggestions on what to use to get it to go?

Thanks

When did you last worm your horse and what did you use? Pinworms will cause itching and sometimes you need to
worm again 2 or 3 weeks after first dose. Equimax usually works but you may need to repeat in a few weeks.

I worm him on a cycle 3 months apart! I use rotational workers exqmeic and strategy t! I last used strategy T around 2 weeks ago and he is my due again untill March?

Thanks

He is itching it off but it isn’t necessarily worms.

Wash his underparts and make sure his sheath is clean. Check that he doesn’t have diarrhea crud building up.

My mare wil rub her tail out badly if I don’t keep her underparts clean.

Generally they are trying to itch under the tail rather than the tail itself.

I wash his underparts after everytime I ride which is almost every day? I am now thinking that becaue there are a lot of trees in his paddock and becaue he goes naked during the day that he might be rubbing it on the trees? Could this be a reason why?

He would not rub if it wasn’t itchy. Perhaps some kind of soothing lotiion? I also think they can get into a habit of itching and keep doing it even after the problem is gone.

My one horse was rubbing his tail even after extensive deworming including a power pack. I had an older tube of ivermectin. It had expired 3 months before so not too old. I rubbed it under the tail and around his anus and that seemed to work. I read that on COTH as another treatment for pinworms.

Slightly off topic please look into fecal counts to determine when and what to use to deworm rather than just rotational worming on a schedule. Rotational worming is leading to drug resistance. Many times people are using products to don’t really work in their area any more due to the resistance the worms have built up to that product.

If he is wearing a blanket could the tail flap be rubbing the top of the tail or causing him to be itchy?

Sometimes geldings that need their sheathes cleaned will rub their tail.

Are you using shampoo when you wash him after every ride? If so this could be leaving residue and making him itch

Yes I use shampoo and conditioner!

Do you suggest any specific shampoo if so should I use it on the tail as well as the body?

I don’t believe in using shampoo on a horse regularly. Wash with plain warm water and use a soothing lotion formulated for horses. If you need a soap for deep crud then a very sparing amount of human baby wash.

If you are washing him down after every ride just use a warm hose or warm bucket and sponge.

Horses need the natural oils in their hair and skin.

I have a mare who loses all the hair on the top of her dock (about 6" from the top down) if she wears a blanket with a tail flap. I’ve learned to cut them out of all her blankets, as it takes FOREVER to regrow that hair.

What Scribbler said. I use the baby version of Castle soap to wash tails maybe once a month in warmer months and only if really needed when it’s cold. I use my own conditioner because it leaves my horses hair soft and shiny like mine!
I do like to rinse sweat off with plain old water if possible. I also got into the habit of wiping down the underside of the dock and aaaaaall the nooks and crannies in that area with water or occasionally adding a small amount of vinegar if it’s cruddy. I had an itchy butted mare who made me do this or she’d rub her tail out, so now everyone gets it and tails have never looked better. Down side is they get used to not being itchy so if you miss a few days the butt scratching can be worse. I do hate making a diva out of a horse.

Where do you live? Do you live in a location where flies and bugs are still active?

Critters like black flies will crawl through the hair at the top of the tail.where the horse can swish all day long and not interrupt the biters. A good flyspray, I like Absorbine Ultrashield, applied daily will keep it unbitten.

I use flygon as my fly spray and we live in Kenthurst! Sorry I mis understood what you said when I replied I only shampoo him once or sometimes twice a week and when I do I condition
the tail as well!

When I do shampoo him I use equi wash is this any good?
