So I have a newish mare at my place who really had a reaction to all the rain last week, and literally broke out in hive-like rain rot. The vet came out and gave her some dex, and it calmed down, but now the skin is a little scabby and the hair is falling out a bit. It’s all over both sides of her neck and down her chest (she is blanketed and clipped). The owner says she is very sensitive skinned. Anyone have any luck with a product that helps with hair regrowth? It’s a pretty large surface area.

ETA: These products are to be used after the acute phase of rain rot is cured and you’re looking to heal bald spots. These are not to be used while horse is still actively fighting the infection. For that, I recommend a homemade solution (through your vet) of 50/50 Desitin & Furazone, 10ml of 4mg/ml of Dex. and 10 ccs of Gent. Apply liberally. Others still have luck with glycerine applied liberally after washing with chlorhex.
I know people feel strongly one way or another about this product but I have had great success with MTG when my OTTB had an extensive case of rain rot when I first got her. In the long term, balancing diet is the best choice to prevent skin issues like rain rot.
Equiderma lotion - hands down. Mild and cures rainrot in 2-3 days. Also helps skin stay moisturized and non-greasy when hair is growing back in.
I know several folks who like That Blue Stuff. Funny name but I believe it has the same active ingredient as equiderma (chlorhexidine) plus several additives like aloe and witch hazel, if that’s something you’re looking for. I have no personal experience with it, though.
 At this time of year it’s going to grow back quickly no matter what voodoo preparation you choose to use. Given that it’s spring shedding season and all.
This!!!
This is the best time of year for hair growth. Just leave her be–it’ll come right back.
She has a schooling show next weekend, and is a bit on the perfectionist side. I told her that if she gets the horse looking great, it will pour down rain. She had a Microderma cleaning cloth, so she rubbed that all over the affected areas, and the next day the bumps were visibly reduced and starting to scab. She has a small amount of silver sulfadiazine so we used that up and our vet friend gave her an almost empty bottle of Entederm, and we coaxed enough out to cover the rest of the affected areas. I have a bottle of the blue lotion stuff, which is about useless in my opinion, so we’ll see what happens.
Everyone need to keep in mind that the new hair did start growing in the end of Dec. when the days started, though you didn’t notice, getting longer. If you are desperate, make sure she is absolutely clean, run over her with clippers, and you may get an even looking coat. A good spray with chlorhexadine solution after clipping should prevent any possible recurrence of the rain rot.
