Hairless Ears on Dog

Our dachshunds ears don’t have hair on the ends of them. The skin is dry and looks flaky. I tried washing them in antibacterial soaps with no improvement.

Any suggestions?

Oh, hell, I don’t remember what this is called, but Koa had it last winter–scurfy ear edges that would crack and bleed occasionally.

Vet gave me this with the instructions to wash the ears well (and let the soap sit for 5-10 minutes) every day.

We did it perhaps 4-5 times a week for 3 weeks and it cleared it up, not to return. I’ll keep an eye on her again this winter and start washing if I see it start up again.

Could be ear margin dermatitis, mites, ringworm, or even vasculitis of some kind. There is something in the back of my head that says dachshunds can also get alopecia on their ear margins for no reason too.

Best get it checked out by a vet to rule out easy treatable things, like ringworm and mites and to get a rx for the proper topical treatment.

Dachsies get a plethora of dermatological issues that affect the ears. They can get anything from dachshund pattern baldness to vasculitis. If they are not cracked and bleeding an presents as scaliness and bald, I would venture to think that is may be ear margin seborrhea.

Melatonin can be given for the hair loss.

AntiSeborrhea products like Seba-hex, Sebalux (are these still around?), or Douxo Seborrhrea spray may help.

My one has the ear margin seborrhea, and benign neglect works well for me! I only worry about it when the scaling gets very thick.

If there are any cracks, fissures, bleeding, thickening or eroding of the ear margin then I would be worried about something much more serious and recommend a dermatologist.
