Halcyon Sir Lancelot (Halcyon, et al), Ward Eight, Mrs. Anne ("Nic") Carpenter

(I have searched on these boards regarding my query, and have produced limited leads, so I am hoping that any current CotH posters may be able to help me out. :yes:)

I am trying to collect information and pictures of horses/ponies bred by the late Mrs. Anne Nicodemus Carpenter, at her own Halcyon Farm in Lederach, PA. There are two closely related families/divisions of interest: 1. USEF-recognized Halcyon Sir Lancelot, and his half-brother Halcyon Perfect Tenn, et al; and 2. Ward Eight, Sangsara, Tammany Tigress, et al. (See below for pedigree links.)

Mrs. Carpenter bred and owned a stallion named “Tommy Tune,” who is the “uncle” to Halcyon Perfect Tenn (half-brother to Halcyon Sir Lancelot, through sire Lord Tennyson). In an unexpected turn of events, J. Michael Plumb inherited Tommy at the time of Mrs. Carpenter’s passing. As I understand, JMP’s mother had bred many predecessors/relations to Tommy, including Tammany Tigress, Sangsara, Suncat, and Kesri. (Throwback to old bloodlines of Ward Eight [aka Connecticut Yankee]! )

For sentimental and professional reasons, I would like to find out as much as I can regarding these horses. If you have or know of any pony or descendant related to the Halcyon lines or Ward Eight/Court Midi lines, please PM me or post here. In essence, I am simply trying to find leads to garner information and mildly resurrect the past.

I’d contact Julie Bellows, she owned Lance for his whole career. I grew up riding at her farm and then working with her. She is an amazing lady and Lance was an amazing, wonderful, talented stallion whom we all still miss. I worked with many of his offspring and they were a joy to break and train. Julie actually stood Perfect Tenn for a short while too, then he was sold on. He too was quite lovely. All very smart, sweet and talented. I just sent you a PM. I had no idea that Lance was bred in Lederach! Lederach is literally 15 mins from us. Small world…
If you haven’t already, you should try to contact Lauren Newmeyer (she googles). She often has Lance ponies in her barn. Also Susan Bunnell of Bracewood Farm. She has bred a lot of Lance ponies.

This is no help, but one very fascinating thing about the mare line is the sire Courlander. He is half Arab through his sire Jedran, and was put in the Jockey Club Arab Appendix book which was active until about 1944. When bred to TBs, his get, I believe, received regular TB papers. I have to say that AFAIK this is the only line still alive that comes from the Arab Appendix book. I’ve certainly never seen another one.

Boy was I surprised to see this thread! I am somewhat familiar with these bloodlines. I had a 1990 homebred (Yankee’s Encore) TB mare by Yankee Passover out of a Herbager grandaughter. I lost her to colic at 21. “Fiddle” was a small bay mare who competed successfully through 1st level dressage with limited showing. She won Performance awards both USDF and Thoroughbred Horses for Sport. Yankee was a TB stallion and full brother to Sangsara, Tammany Tigress and I believe a couple others . Marty Detering had an eventer out of a Ward Eight mare and KC VanDyck had a Boarding Party gelding out of Sangsara. Karen Stives and later Naomi Pitcairn competed a Yankee Passover(?) mare Yankee Girl (registered name “Ask”). They were all athletic and on the small side. Another friend had a mare and a gelding by Yankee Passover. Shirley Watt competed Ward Eight (shown as Connecticut Yankee) for the US in dressage in the 1956 olympic games in Stockholm. I believe Mimi Plumb owned Tammany Tigress. Dee Thomas had 2 show hunters with these lines as well as Lolly Clark.

The arab blood. I called the Jockey Club once and wanted to know how my Yankee Passover TB could have an Arab ancestor so recently in their pedigree. I was told it could not be so. Had the papers to prove it.

Thank you so very much to everyone for the feedback! Maude, I am very impressed with what you know! JMP himself had not recalled Yankee Girl.

We are (fingers crossed) breeding Tommy Tune to our ISH mares and American TB mares this spring. I believe Tommy will refine and enhance the qualities of each. Halcyon Perfect Tenn (Lance’s half-brother) is currently in Florida, but hopefully be standing in S.Pines with us beginning later this spring.

I’m looking forward to resurrecting these lines "from the past,’ as I believe they represent some of the best qualities of American bloodlines. I’ve named our program “Halcyon Hunters” in Mrs. Carpenter’s honor. The best I can tell, Tommy Tune appears to be the last of a generation of heritage, of quietly bold emotion and meaning. Fingers crossed.
