Half Moon Bay Trail Ride – Photos

Just wanted to share a few photos from the West Coast! These are photos from the trails above my barn – they over look Half Moon Bay, CA. The “trails” are basically beefed up deer trails, but the pony and I have fun out on them (and we might canter around and jump bushes as well ). Very hilly country, pony’s booty is looking great from the extra trail time!

Grass hill with flowers leading to the ridge

Up the lane across the ride

To the Trial Head - Ok deer trail

Views to the east – small grass fed cattle operation

View to the north – half moon bay, Pacific Ocean to the west, canyon with cattle and crops to the east

Wild Iris are out this time of year

Lots of coyote scat on this particular trail

And there goes the sun

Smokey from the Sonoma County fires

What a gorgeous ride! Thanks for sharing it with us

Beautiful! Brings back memories of growing up on the SF Bay Peninsula during the 50’s.

Beautiful! I don’t know why, but when I visited that area, I was so drawn to Half Moon Bay and felt like it was one place I wanted to move to.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic photos.

I have always felt this way too about that place. Far away from there now, but maybe someday…

Wow, how beautiful! I’m sure you thank your lucky stars for those experiences. What a gorgeous place to ride, and what a pretty appy you have!

I got a little dizzy looking at the photo of the coyote scat… I couldn’t tell which way I was looking from, but I finally figured out you must have twisted around and taken the pic over your horse’s butt.

Yep - funny shot from over her flank.

You know, I am very thankful. I grew up here, and my dad used to always remind me “people travel from all over the world to see this, and you get to see it every day”. He grew up in steel mill country in PA, and really did appreciate the beauty here.

It wasn’t until I moved away for 10 years after college (Orange county ca and San Jose) that I really came to appreciate what the San Mateo County coast has to offer. I love it here… I live out on 90 acres, a mix of meadows and redwoods, near the pacific. It’s a very special place - but I also sacrifice a lot to be here. I pay a ton in rent, I will never be able to afford to buy here, and I spend 3 hours a day commuting to work :frowning:

But it is so beautiful! Close to so much, yet not over run with people.

Thanks for the compliments on my appy - I am just as smitten with her. Owned her since she was 3 weeks old and hand raised her. She is my best buddy and tons of fun!

I love Half Moon Bay! I used to live in Oakland and would go there quite often. There was a lovely restaurant on the beach that we would stop for beer and mussels. Miss that place sometimes. Beautiful pictures!

My computer won’t show them :(…my sister lived in that area in the 80’s…I’m from SO. CA and always wanted to move north to your area.

I grew up in San Mateo County and spent time in Half Moon Bay. Where were these pictures taken? My first trail rides as a little kid were there. I know what chaperal is and why horsemen in California wore chaps and chinks. The country side in Half Moon Bay taught me. And yes, the horse trails are just a tad wider (and wider higher up) than deer trails.

We spent a lot of time at Pillar Point. Used to come over Devil’s Slide from Pacifica back in the early '80’s, we hiked around Pacifica a lot too. It’s beautiful country. However deep in my brain is the memory of endless wind and fog too in the summertime - but the soft spring weather was the absolute best. Thanks for sharing and I swear I am going to take the camera next time we trailer out!

I love Half Moon Bay and that area. Thanks for sharing those great shots. Nice trails.

Very fun.

I went hiking with my Dad down in Point Reyes recently and we drove by a bunch of horse trailheads and I said, “Self, why the heck aren’t you bringing your pony out riding here??” I have to get her out more and fit, and I have to find a good trail riding buddy in my area.

That was beautiful. Your dad is right, people do travel from all over to see your location. As I went thru the pics I thought how very lucky you are and also how remote and peaceful. I am glad you appreciate it and shared your ride with us.

I love riding out there. I boarded in Montara for a long time…beautiful riding!
