Half Pad. Lami-cell VS Ogilvy

Hey there all!

I am looking to get my half pad replaced. Would love to keep getting my jump saddle reflocked but every 6 months it seems to go flat pretty quick ever since I got it flocked the first time. At the moment there is one fitter that can come to where we are and I need something to ease the dipping until the months pass when they can come out.

I am currently using an Eco-gold memory foam half pad that I LOVE! Mattes pads doesn’t hold anything to this great pad.
But the pad got flat after a year and I need a half pad with front risers or inserts. I had a sheepskin with front inserts that doesn’t cut it, he doesn’t feel great under it.

I saw the Ogilvy is thicker and more like the memory foam of the Eco-gold. The price is a bit staggering but they do offer front inserts for the pad.

Also came across Lamicell.

I wanted to hear if anyone has tried either of these and if they offer a bit more padding or cushion for a saddle that is a tad wider.

My horse needs a m/w saddle but his withers need a bit more fill in or paneling (we have custom panels in our dressage to fit) so we tend to use a front riser foam pad. Thanks in advance for any experiences.

I’d be inclined to contact Eco Gold & discuss with them first - sound like you’re happy with their pad and it may just be an oddity that it’s flattened or perhaps a different shape would work better …

I recently tried using an Ogilvy on an ottb with the classic pockets behind his withers. Not impressed. It made a saddle that otherwise fit decently bounce in the cantle.

Ended up with a Thinline Segue, the larger version of their quilted Trifecta (saddle is a 19"). The 3/16" front shims are just enough to fill in till he muscles up, without messing up the rest, and no bouncing. Both the horse and his massage therapist approve

Are you asking about the Lamicell half pad with gel foam? If so, I use it on my OTTB with her favorite saddle which is just a bit wide. It takes up the extra space very well and is very impact resistant. She seems to be comfortable in it; when she’s not comfortable, she’s not shy about saying so.

I have an ogilvy that I use without inserts. Ogilvies have 3 styles, a 1 1/4 in, a 1 in and a gummy type pad. I own the 1 1/4 inch and I think inserts would negatively effect the balance. The other thicknesses might be better!

I highly recommend ogilvy though…easiest half pad to clean ever

Read this thread before considering an Ogilvy…it’s been eye opening:
