Halter for shipping cross-country: fleece or not?

Hi! My horse will be making a 2800 mile journey across the country this week with Brook Ledge, and I’m trying to decide what he should wear on his head. Horse is a good shipper, but has never gone this far. The journey will be 3 days.

How much, if any halter protection would be ideal for the trip?Any thoughts from those who have done this would be appreciated! Options are:

1 - Very nice leather “every day” halter. I don’t think this halter rubs, but it’s not usually worn for very long - only to/from turnout and while grooming in crossties.

2 - Shipping halter with super-fluffy natural sheepskin tubes covering every piece of leather. It’s going to be a HOT week, so I’m wondering if this will cause sweating even with fans in the vans.

3 - Leather halter with partial sheepskin tubing, maybe just noseband and crown piece. A compromise?

WWYD, oh wise people of COTH? TIA!

I’ve always done strips of flannel bandage material or fleece fabric wrapped around the halter and secured with tape.

No fleece, too hot.

Ask the company whether they prefer or require a leather or web halter since pro shippers generally have a preference or requirement.

This would be my choice as well. Not as pretty as a beautiful sheepskin covered halter but gets the job done with less bulk and heat.

Me three on this. I just wrapped the crownpiece and over the nose, really doesn’t sit right on the hair/skin to where it can rub anywhere else. Think the fancy fleece pieces on every part of the halter are for the humans to oogle over.

But I only use leather anymore, have had more rubbing with nylon in general when I have used it, especially when they sweat. Rarely use it for that reason, if you do ship in it, you might want to get the lined nylon or wrap the whole thing.

Thanks everyone! The shipper requires leather, which is all I use anyway. Off to get some flannel

This…when we used to ship race horses, this was the halter covering of choice!! Make sure you cover all buckles and halter hardware, but leave room to attach a shank.
