Hi All, I have two tennessee walkers and I do keep their breakaway halters on from time to time. The only problem is that the nose bands can rub the hair off of their noses. Can you recommend a good cushion that I can purchase to hook onto the halter nosebands? One that will hold up to rain and is washable? thanks
I use real sheepskin. You can wash it - I just add a moisturizer (Leather Therapy Laundry Rinse and Dressing) to the rinse cycle (available at the tack shop). My mare loses her hair from her fly mask and it works really well. You might want to just wrap the noseband with the sheepskin and sew it together like a tube (it may be hard to sew it to the halter itself). I went to a used tack store and picked up a girth sleeve and cut it up. It’s pretty easy to work with and durable.
You can buy real or synthetic halter…um…guards, maybe? Can’t remember what they are called but it’s just a length of sheepskin or synthetic fluffy material with Velcro that can be rolled around any harness or halter strap and fastened. Usually find it listed with the shipping halters as thats a common use. It’s really a common thing, not a big deal. I like synthetic since you can throw it in the wash and it’s cheaper. Stuff takes a beating.
You can also wrap the nosebands with elasticized, self adhesive wrap. Sold as Vet Wrap and other names for horses. Also as generic elastic, self adhesive wrap in your drugstore first aid section for far less plus take it with you instead of shipping. Works good, lasts a long time, just cut off and discard when worn.
thanks all!! I found some cute colored fleece halter protectors on amazon for both my girls.
Wash them first if they are colored, they dye can bleed out when they sweat under it. Don’t ask…
