Halter Vs. Halter In Hand?!

I wasn’t entirely sure where to put this… It didn’t seem to fit into other categories.

Looking at a show flyer for an upcoming fun show I noticed they had a Halter class and also Halter In Hand… Maybe I’m over-thinking this, but what is the difference?

They also have Showmanship and Showmanship In Hand. It’s just tripping me up. I LOVE Showmanship (obviously…), but I’m just puzzled because Showmanship is in-hand…So…What’s the big difference that we need Showmanship and Showmanship In Hand?

Help! I’m afraid I’ve lost my mind!

Off Course is the place to put things that don’t belong in the other categories.

I would ask the person running the show. it is possible they offer halter and showmanship where you don’t use a lead rope, although I have only seen the leadless class offered as showmanship…it doesn’t really make sense in halter.

Snort. You have not lost your mind. Are you in the MidWest by any chance? I just went through this last weekend w/ my kid and her pony.

Definitely email the people in charge of the show (show bill vs prize list. Ug. When I asked for a prize list, they responded we don’t give out prizes, just ribbons. I am in pop vs soda and sneaker vs tennis shoe hell).

For THIS situation, Halter was on the quality of the horse, horse could go in bridle if it was a hunter. No judgedon the kids. Halter-in-hand was a combo of kid and quality of pony judged. “Showmanship” was some 4H pattern the kids had to do, plus stand in some imaginary box when the judge was on X size of the pony. (we did not do showmanship).

The people who are running the show can decipher it for you. To this Zone 2 Hunter Princess, we may as well have been reading Chinese.

BTW- it was fun. Not what we are used to be a good time and experience. Kiddo and pony’s first time not in lead line so it was the perfect situation for them.

I agree that you will need to talk to the show management.

I do a lot of local shows and I have never seen “halter in hand” or “showmanship in hand”. It’s either halter (where the horse’s conformation is judged) or showmanship (where your skills as a handler are judged).

who knows, but the Arabian shows have a class designated as “in hand” along with a regular halter class. The in hand class weighted brilliance more heavily than the regular halter class IIRC (and this memory is from when I showed a half arab in these classes in the early 80’s, so grain of salt - use one). Both judged conformation and correctness of movement, but one added an element of brilliance.

That might be what they are after, but again, only show management really knows!

Could “In hand” refer to English tack and attire? Like “Hunter In Hand?”

No idea what those classes are, but do they still have working hunter appointment classes, where you had to put special gloves a certain way under the saddle flaps, the fingers folded and pointing just right, the right kind of sandwich case and food in it and flask with something in it, etc.?

The judge then went all over that to be sure you had it right.

String gloves?

Yep, string gloves is what we had to put under the flaps in those appointment classes.

Was wondering if they still have those classes?

Not very often if ever, no. Show hunter fashion is now very different from field hunter fashion.

Thanks everyone for feedback. My friend did e-mail the show committee but never got a response. Guess we’ll find out when we go!

I never even thought of that!! That would make sense.

I thought in open shows classes came with a description, so you knew what to expect.

Entirely dependent on the show and what the show manager chooses to put in the rule book/prize list.
