Before and after clipping. I wanted to bathe her in Quic Black but the hose was filling troughs. Tomorrow.
Wow, she really does look good post-clip! I wouldnāt bother with the Quik Black. By the time inspection comes, sheāll have grown enough new coat sheāll be darker
My, my she looks great and has a great shine. Pleaseā¦she doesnāt need anything else put on her coat. The shine and depth of color radiate good health and quality, no artificial āhelpā needed here. Fact it might look artificial.
We always used a lot of regular towels on the Halter horses after curry and stiff brush steps, they seem to boost the shine like nothing else.
She looks great! Pretty girl. Itās been really fun to watch her confidence grow through the chute.
For the record, I did not do her legs.
Did a touch-up today (you know how you never see the stragglers until you have cleaned the blade and put everything away? Yeah). Did the top of her tail as well - not full eventer of course, just to a little above the hip bone and trimmed the top. Did fetlocks, though there wasnāt much to take off. The week and some change will be good to get rid of any issues, though I donāt see many.
And because Iām an ecumenical abuser, the old man got a clean up clip job too.
Wow, great clip job!
Had a short ride yesterday, some jumps were still set up and two sets sit and lift poles from a few days ago. Didnāt really work on anything in particular other than carrying herself and going politely to the jumps. Good girl.
I found a way to hate the pink stuff less, and thatās to apply it while sheās damp from being hosed off, and then distribute it with a tiger tongue sponge. It seemed to coat the hair and the skin a little better.
Trying to figure out my schedule. She gets Thursday off no matter what, so Iām thinking:
Wednesday - dressage/flat (gets reshod today)
Thursday - off
Friday - dressage/flat
Saturday - lunge (will be short on time)
Sunday - hack
Monday - dressage/flat
Tuesday - trailer to inspection site, 5-6 hours
Wednesday - acclimate, jump chute acclimation, light ride, lots of hand walking and grazing
Thursday - INSPECTION
How does that look?
Looks good and sensible. Leaves plenty of time to absorb unexpected delays and avoid rushing or panic. Plenty of time for the horse too
To try and save some time, I was planning on braiding down (but not stitching up) the night before. If I braid all the way itās almost guaranteed she will rub them out.
Has anyone done the down part the day before, covered with a lycra over night, then finished in the morning?
Or should I just plan to do it all in the morning?
One word: Dory.
Good point. Morning it is.
Iāll probably make the separate pieces so I donāt end up with a weird braid with no time to fix it, but yeahā¦
Iāve had good luck full braiding (dressage buttons) the night before and keeping them in under the lycra slinky. My gelding was pretty good about not rubbing.
Along with braiding I would bang the tail. Doesnāt have to be super short but will make it look fuller and tidier. If you donāt like short then bang it where it starts being at itās thickest.
@BatCoach this mare would likely rub them out. Though, I havenāt tried since the Hunter Braid Incident, which are put in markedly tighter than button braids with a small hood. I always prefer to braid the night before, because then they can stretch them out a little to make them comfy.
@Jealoushe I totally will! It was mentioned upthread - Iām waiting until the last minute to minimize any breakage, I want it to look crisp. I plan to do it the day before we leave - itās long enough now to dangle into a poop pile. I think about mid-fetlock is where Iām going to snip it.
You know Shaney (or should we start calling her Dory? haha) best. if you think there is a chance she will rub them out - she most likely will.
Iām so excited to hear how the event goes. For those who have done this before - is approval granted day of? Or do you have to wait to hear the results of your horseās ranking?
Good plan! I also find it is the more it is likely to have hairs pulled out from debris on the ground, and their legs when kept long. So keeping it short will help with that too. Looking forward to seeing the āfinalā look!
Had a very⦠Dory ride tonight. Sheās in heat so Iāll blame that.
We would not leg yield to the left into the arena, but we would to the rail.
We would not listen to seat aids for down transitions. We would listen to voice commands about 10% of the time. But, we would listen when I said āShayney!ā through gritted teeth 100% of the time. The barrel outside the arena was worth a look today - nevermind that there were 3ā flames leaping out of it yesterday and that was a-ok. Etc. Etc.
I love my 5 year old, I love my 5 year old, I love my 5 year oldā¦
You are getting nervous and she is reading you. Just stick to the plan and donāt panic and you will be fine.
Iām really not . Sheās a weirdo when sheās in heat every time. Iām glad sheās in this week, so she will be out for the inspection.
We had some super awesome mediums in both canter and trot, so itās not all bad. Just amusing that the new cue for a down transition is growling her nameā¦
@SusanO That said⦠talk to me on Tuesday when Iām on my way there and yeah Iāll be ready to puke.
