Hi there! I currently have a horse I imported from the UK back in 2000 out of Wendekreis. He’s been an absolutely fabulous guy but he’s nearing 28 and I’m looking for my next jumper/eventer. I see the Wendekreis line has continued with Wendulan, Werther, and further down with Fabrino. I’ve also found Westporte with Wenderkreis down the mare line. Are there more recent stallion names I should be looking for that are related? Are there unrelated names with similar traits from that line? I love the temperament, athleticism, and work ethic of my horse so I’m looking for something similar. I’m not familiar enough with breeding to know what lines throw what qualities. Thanks!
First, foals are “out of” mares and “by” stallions. So your horse is “by Wendekreis”.
Unfortunately, this sire line has pretty much died off. You can still get frozen semen for some of them (e.g., Werther, Fabriano) so if you have a nice mare, you could breed your own direct offspring. The demise of this line started with breeding of “dressage specialists” and “jumping specialists” and away from “all rounders.” And the final nail in the “all rounder” coffin will come with the bifurcation of the judging scales for dressage horses and jumping horses.
You can still find Wendekreis in mare lines, but only further and further back.
My apologies for the bad wording, I knew that. I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of bloodlines and my brain isn’t working properly.
I noticed the whole “dressage vs. jumper” breeding, which seems unfortunate. Especially because eventers want their horse to do both, although jumping is more imperative. It’s unfortunate the line has died out, he’s been a fantastic horse with wonderful movement, power, and handiness. I would’ve loved to have another relative, even if it’s way down the line because I know what I have. I’ve definitely seen that line a lot more in the mares, which is something though. In your opinion, are there more current studs that have similar qualities to the Wendekreis line? I don’t know much about disposition and temperament of what’s out there now.
A stallion you might consider is Schwartzeneggar (sp). He stands in Canada and he is an all arounder that seems to pass a very nice amateur friendly temperment judging by the baby my friend got from her breeding to him. Good luck.
Valentino and Diacontinus also produce dual purpose horses.
The amazing Desperados FRH (who unfortunately passed away) come with Wendekreis on the mother side. Desperados also come out of sire lines with plenty of multi talented genes. Same goes for Quaterback who to my knowledge is available in the US.
