Has anoyone made their own Kurandra style dog bed?

I’ve got a serious chewer/shredder. My dogs are in an x pen when we’re not home and Zinny has turned the beds in there into a nest of fluff and foam. This weekend we’re going to go pick up some carpet to use as the base in the pen, but I’d still like to have some beds in there (especially for my older dog, who will be 10 this year.)

The Kundra beds (http://kuranda.com/) certainly look like a good option, but they also seem like they’d be pretty easy to make yourself. Has anyone done that?

I’ve found a couple sets of instructions online:

But would love to hear about others experiences.

Depends on how heavy/active your dogs are.

The PVC definitely does not hold up to Irish Wolfhounds, I have tried many over the years and they will shatter, mostly the corners. Doesn’t help that the hounds run andd jump on them, try to lie double on them, etc. a friend with greyhounds has had better luck, but still has had some issues.

Only the Kuranda all metal have held up for us. I too hate how expensive they are, but if you use eBay they are a tad less.

I have this bed, a Kakadu, that I got at a local “bargain hunt” place for $25. It’s held up to my dogs (2 GSD, a dobe, an english setter, a standard poodle and a giant schnauzer mix) with often two dogs sharing it. Compared to plush beds, it’s held up extremely well. It is getting a touch saggy in the middle, but not much.

I envy you, StGermain.

I had this bed too. Lasted two weeks here.

Really depends upon the size/weight/activity level of your dogs. Mine are 150-200 pounds, very active, very hard on things that normal dogs are perfectly OK with. Sigh.

These beds would be solely for the xpen where the dogs spend time when we’re not home. It’s roughly 8 x 8, so not a whole lot of room to go nuts. They’re about 70 lbs a piece, so not as big as your hounds, Houndhill.

StGermain, that Kakadu sure does look interesting, and the price is right. I’ll keep an eye out, although it looks like they might be tough to track down.

When we’re home, the dogs do fine with their regular squishy beds–we can redirect the puppy if she starts getting interested in something inappropriate, but she just goes to town when we’re gone. Just pulled four garbage bags stuffed FULL of fluff out of the xpen tonight. Sigh.

Simkie - Would you like me to keep an eye out at my place and let you know if they get any more? You’d have to pay the shipping to CO from TN, but I’d be glad to pick one up for you. I can PM you one if I see it, and if you still want it I can go back and pick it up.

Wow, thank you so much for the offer, StGermain! Do the beds collapse down into a shippable state? If they do, I would certainly appreciate a headups if you see them again large enough for a Ridgeback, and would happily compensate you for shipping and your time and trouble

The box is about 36" long by about 8" X 8" for the big bed (some assembly required  ). The big bed is big, though - it takes up a big footprint (4’ X 3"). It’s no problem to keep an eye out. I’ll let you know what I find.

StG

Awesome, thank you!

Simkie - I stopped by the store today and they had one large Kakadu. It’s smaller than the extra large I linked to before, being 36" X 30" with a capacity of 150 lbs. It was $22 including tax (plus applicable shipping, probably about $10 I’d guess). Are you interested? I bought it in case you are, but will be glad to keep it if you aren’t - my XLG takes up a bit too much room.

I don’t see them all that often at this store - it sells closeouts and Amazon returns. I’m there pretty regularly if you want me to keep looking for an XLG, or you can have this one. It’s navy blue.

StG

Woooo! Yes, I would love to try it  I will send you a PM!!

Simkie - Bed’s Away! You should receive it by Friday. Check your PM for tracking info.

COTH teamwork in action!

Simkie - Did you get the bed? When I put mine up, it was difficult because the tension is very tight, but it can be done.

StG

It’s here!! I just got home from the barn, so I’ve not taken it out of the box yet. Working on a end of week glass of wine and will attempt the bed a little later tonight

Thank you again for snagging it and sending it! You got the paypal, yes? (Imagine you’d say something if not, but want to make sure we’re square. :))

More than square, thank you very much. It’s been a wild week at work (auditors, ugh) and home (dog lame, horse lame, etc) so I hadn’t taken the time to acknowledge it. I hope it works out for you. I went to a different branch of hte same store at lunch and saw this, and it was cheap ($18) but it’s too big for my purposes.
