Did you have good results with ?
I know this is several months old, but it came up in a search and I thought I’d drop input…
I work at a feed store that sells high quanities of Seminole, Triple Crown, Cavalor, etc.
The Perform Safe is in the top 5 selling feeds. It’s good for the hunters, the easy jumpers that don’t need “extra” and the regular horses who just need to be maintained.
I have my 4 year old on it, she’s easy to keep but growing. She got chunky on the TC Senior, so I dropped her to the Perform Safe and she’s doing well. Only downside is it’s a plain pellet and some horses don’t love it, or if you feed a lot of supplements it doesn’t mix/stick.
I need a feed that I can sprinkle over my formerly IR horse’s handful of beet pulp and supplements. I prefer Seminole over Triple Crown, although I’m disappointed that Seminole’s feeds seem to be higher in sugar than TC. Do you think the Perform Safe is tasty enough to be tempting or should I consider one of the textured feeds?
I doubt it. I actually mix in a cup of TC Senior into my mare’s feed to mix up the powder she gets.
TC Senior is undoubtedly the lowest starch and sugar in a “textured” feed you will find. It seems to do the trick most of the time.
Aside from the Senior, TC and Seminole run about the same NSC levels, though TC is more sugar and Seminole is more starch.
If you like the Seminole and it’s only a small amount, the Calm & Cool is 22 NSC (13 starch, 9 sugar). It’s low fat (3%), smells great and if it’s just a little bit it could be okay. Most of their textures are higher starches. The Dynasport actually has low NSC (9 starch, 6 sugar) but it’s super high fat (14%). Again, you aren’t really feeding enough to make a substantial difference. But of course, you know your horse and the severity of his IR issues the best. Sometimes you can squeak extra ins, and sometimes you can’t.
I actually currently have some of the Calm & Cool, which my horses LOVE, but when I realized the sugar was so high I quite giving it to the IR horse. I actually have another horse, an easy keeper, who gets a handful of feed as well - and TC Sr gives him diarrhea for some strange reason. Maybe the Seminole Compete Safe would work, since it’s a bit lower in sugars and fat. Neither horse gets much at all - so I’m probably overthinking the whole thing. They sure do love the Calm and Cool, and the picky (IR) horse comes flying in for his feed. When he just gets beet pulp I sometimes have to go get him, he’s so blasé about his food.
Go with TC Sr - it’s a textured feed so things will stick at least a little, and its NSC is lower than the Perform Safe, even if by just a little: 13% vs 11.7.
Seminole mills the best feeds. Period. You know why the ingredients are printed on the bag and not on a tag attached to the bag? Because the ingredients don’t change each time the feed is made. Date is stamped on bag so you know if your feed store has held it in the warehouse. Feed is delivered once a week, fresh, and up from Ocala.
Try the hay also. No weeds. Guaranteed as is the feed to be free of contaminates.
Call down to Ocala and ask Larry Mack what feed to feed your horse. He’s the expert on feeds.
I use the “Safe and Lite.” If your horse is funny about added supplements, you can wet your pellets and mix supplements in it.
JB, you are probably right about the TC Sr for my IR guy. I was just trying to find one feed that would work for both horses, and the TC Sr gives my other gelding diarrhea. I certainly can feed 2 different things, though. After all, I have 2 dogs and 2 different dog foods - don’t know why horses would be any different;)
