Thanks for the correction. I read that on some vet med related website (can’t recall now exactly where), so I assumed they described it accurately but I guess not!
I’m so glad you brought this up. Mine just started on trazadone. He was on fluoxetine, which made him some what quiet but made his reactions worse, bigger. So we are trying trazadone. He gets a little zoned out but my issue with it is he seems really head shy all of sudden. His dose is really low, 100mg/day.
I’m not sure, I kind of wonder if it creates anxiety in some horses because they feel the loss of control maybe.
Only 100mg a day?! I would honestly be surprised if that was enough for him to feel anything from it.
My mare started at 450mg which was half of the starting dose my vet wrote, (she wrote the prescription for me to start at 6x150mg pills, but I wanted to see if we could get by with less), but only stayed there for a couple weeks. Ended up maxing out on 1350mg a day, although she was blowiing thru that much by the end too she is a very small horse (14.2 but horse sized body, lol. She normally weighs about 950lbs) who was still turned out 24/7 still, we were just trying to keep her quiet out there, not total stall rest.
