Has anyone had luck tracking down a horse by a microchip?

Basically what the title states lol I have a wb mare who I would love to know the breeding of but unfortunately I don’t have her papers. I was told she was registered and the name of her sire (Rendezvous if anyone knows him? I’ve also been told Sir Rendezvous so I don’t know if they are the same stallion or different) but don’t have any concrete proof. She sin’t branded but is mircochipped, so is there anyway you could trace her through that? I guess in the end is doesn’t really matter, but if I could, I would really like to get her papers  Thank you for any help!

Yes, I’ve done it a few times. Most microchips have a proprietary sequence so you can at least determine the manufacturer. Then you contact that manufacturer and they can tell you who they sold it to though that doesn’t mean the person they sold it to was the last owner or the first owner but it is a start.

Oh okay, how do I go about finding the manufacturer? I have her microchip number so I assume its a sequence within that? At the moment I’ve got nothing, so a start is all I’m looking for  Thank you for your help!

Can you please post the microchip number? A place that currently tracks pedigree, identification info, competition, and breeding info on over 2 million horses and has over 180,000 of those already identified by microchip number is www.equicore.com. If you can’t locate the horse there, please contact me and I have the connections to advise you on finding the information.

Can you look up the sire and check with the registries he is approved with. AFAIK they record the microchip number with the registration.

Oh wow thank you both for replying! Her microchip number is 981020005529936  Hopefully even if she isn’t on equicore, her sire might be and I’ll have a lead at least! I never even knew about that site. Thank you so much for your help SilverCreek! Hopefully it will give me a lead

I have tried to search for her sire Christa P, but I’ve come up blank so far. I have found one stallion by the name of Rendezvous who could be her sire, but I haven’t found a lot of information about him. I have looked on both of our ‘main’ warmblood registries and he doesn’t appear in either of them. I don’t think the owner registers any of her stock (despite the stallion being very well-bred). I did try to send her a message to see if she could give me some more information, but I haven’t heard back. I haven’t been able to find anything about a stallion called Sir Rendezvous, but I was told there was as showjumper named that a while ago, owned by a family in NSW. Other than that I can seem to find anything.

I tired to sign up for the free trial on Equicore but am having trouble :frowning: It doesn’t seem to want to accept my card and gets stuck on the last step.Has anyone else encountered this?

According to http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org/ that chip is manufactured by http://www.petlink.net/, if that helps any

I contacted Petlink and I was told that the mircochip number is invalid, so I’m going to get the vet to recheck the number next time he comes out  If the chip number was recorded incorrectly or something, this might get a whole heap easier a whole lot quicker lol I did send an email back saying why the chip might be invalid if that is the correct number, but haven’t got a response back yet

If the number was recorded correctly, it’s most likely that the chip was never registered-- the owner of the horse has to log in and fill out the information somewhere. I don’t know whether it’s possible for the microchip company to track down the vet practice that purchased the chip or not.
