I’m looking for a new helmet. The Tipperary Sportage Plus that I have is too hot and it just doesn’t fit me very well. I saw the LAS helmet and I was wondering if anyone has tried it…If that doesn’t work I think I will probably try the new Tipperary 8500.
Don’t care for them. Got one and never use it, just feels funny on my head and like a bike helmet? I also didn’t like the older Tipperarys, but I just bought a new one and love it. They changed something and it just feels better!
I like the LAS helmet. I have the adjustable fit version (the cheap one). It is great. I think which helmet you like has to do with the shape of your head. If you have an oval head versus a round head, it will make a difference. I liked Troxel and lately I have gone for the LAS helmet.
Which LAS helmet, there are a bunch…
Las Helmet
I saw the LAS Hi Tek in the nice colors and that is the one that I am considering (if it fits correctly). I don’t know if it will fit…my head is a long oval shape. I have an IRH show helmet that I love riding in and it doesn’t move if I get into a jam…the Tipperary Sportage Plus seems to slide all over the place on me. I usually have to try about 15 helmets on before I find one that fits correctly. I don’t really mind if it fits like a bike helmet as I raced bicycles for a number of years but I prefer a helmet that offers a degree of protection to the back of the head (like the Tipperary concept and my IRH). Also, I heard that the LAS doesn’t have an ANSI rating but that it does have a European safety rating…will this be OK to wear in AERC and ECTRA events?
AERC doesn’t have a helmet rule for adult riders (probably because their origins were California where western cowboy hats were/are in the majority).
So, if you are not a junior, anything you wear on your head…or not (depending upon any helmet rule imposed by individual rides management)…is fine by AERC.
BTW - You should see the photos of the wild and wacky head covers at rides that are Halloween costume oriented!
Well I really like mine. Mainly because it fits my head better than any other helmet I’ve had!! I want to protect the back of my skull!! I wear low pony tails just fine with it.
Mine looks like a traditional black velvet helmet. The padding is lovely. I’m not sure what other models they have. I want to say I paid around $250-$300 or so for mine??? A few years ago, I don’t remember exactly.
Edited to add…This is it: http://www.equestriancollections.com/product.asp?groupcode=JP00137
So I guess the “local” tack store charged me a bit more–still, no shipping and I got to try it on!
I would buy this helmet again.
