Has anyone tried Zylkene Equine?

I have a somewhat (very) neurotic gelding who is recovering from a hind suspensory injury. He’s super worried…all of the time…add to that the year of stall rest, shockwave, PRP, stem cell treatment, small paddock, handwalking, ulcer guard (POISON!!! HE THINKS ULCERGUARD IS POISON!) and he just seems totally unhappy. I asked my vet if there was a prozac for horses and he recommended this. Anyone have any experience? I’m on day 4 and haven’t noticed anything yet, but would try anything to help this guy feel better. Has anyone had amazing results? Any results?

Hi Showidaho!
Did you have any results with the Zylkene?

I tried Zylkene with my pony. Firstly, he wasn’t happy at all to have the stuff smeared into his nostrils. I did not notice any positive results, maybe they were counteracted because he was so tense after the fight to put the thing into his nostrils. But then, my pony is very fussy about any stuff going anywhere close to his head.

Anyway, I think the effects of Zylkene do not last long (may be about 3-4 hours), they are adequate for things like getting used to new surroundings, vet or farriers visits and so on (or so I was told).

Hmmmm…I didn’t smear anything, I put it in his food, but no difference noticed.

Oooopss!!! You’re right Callista17!!! What I used was Confidence EQ based on equine appeasing pheromones (also naturally produced by mares and seemingly calming horses of all ages), not Zylkene.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, OP.

Anyway, I think you can buy individual sachets of Zylkene so you can give it a try at a low cost.

No problem. I wouldn’t say low cost, but I have a lot if extra:-( I can’t remembet how much each packet was, but I remember I wanted him to have every.last.molecule. lol

I tried Zylkene with no effect other than for horse to give me the hairy eyeball because he hates anything fake apple flavored. I know others who swear by it, though. I have had success with Prozac and ConfidenceEQ. Prozac you can get in a shot that lasts approx 4 weeks or you can dose daily orally. FWIW, my horse doesn’t mind UlcerGard at all and found oral Prozac to be poison, but the shots turned out to not be appropriate for him. I used ConfidenceEQ to get my horse started back under saddle and also at first to stand still for things like farrier appointments.

Fabulous! I used it on a horse I was rehabbing from a hind suspensory injury so he was still on stall rest when I was riding him. It was way better than reserpine!!

He was not an easy horse to begin with.

Try THUNDER MOUNTAIN MINERALS. Phenomenal success with calming horses, laminitis and other soundness issues.

Can you link to product information and test results on that?

Not impressed. Contains wheat and soy. Biotin and two probiotic strains are listed as ingredients, but are not on the guaranteed analysis. Supposedly contains 69 minerals, but their guaranteed analysis only sites 6. Based on the limited data here, no idea how this product would calm horses, let alone help with laminitis or other soundness issues.

New Thunder Mountain Mineral supplements are anything but new. In fact, they’re extremely old. As in old as dirt. Our minerals don’t come from a chemical plant, they come from the earth. This is the major reason why they are absorbed and tolerated by horses so well.

When a horse has the minerals it needs, it feels good. It doesn’t have to over eat to try to get the nutrition it craves. That means less fat, bloat, and less cleanup.

Why 69? That’s because there are 69 essential minerals in New Thunder Mountain Minerals supplements for horses. That’s over 50% more than the leading brand.
