Has anyone used fly and mite sprays containing silicon dioxide? It's said to kill bed bugs?

This is a spin-off from the diatomateous earth post. Last week I came across some horse pest control products that contain silicon dioxide. One product is made in the UK and another is made in the US.

This UK product claims to work on winter horse mites, summer sweet itch.

Cedar Bug-Freeâ„¢ Fly Spray for Horses and Livestock kills flies, mosquitoes, gnats, ticks (including deer ticks), fleas, chiggers, lice, mites and other biting insects and then continues to work as a fly repellent. It even works as a mosquito repellent.

This Cedar Oil and Hydrated Silica formulation also dissolves the insect eggs and larvae, eliminating the next generation of arthropod, while the aroma of Cedar disrupts their pheromone signals and creates a barrier of entry to newly arriving pests.

Hmmm. Things that kill insects and things that repel insects are two different categories.

Insects are actually pretty easy to kill on contact. Alcohol, vinegar, even hot soap and water, will take out many insects. A mosquito is very fragile and easy to kill.

What’s much trickier is effectively repelling insects for significant periods of time.

I could see the silica gel being effective in killing insects in an animal’s coat, such as fleas and ticks and mites and lice. Indeed even a good hot bath will do wonders for a cat with fleas.

But the cedar oil is going to be just mehhh as a repellant for outdoor insects. And it’s not very long lasting.
