Has anyone used RenoVo for arthritis?

Hi!

I rescued my QH cross mare last year, she has severe knee OA/DJD. She’s not rideable due to advanced OA/DJD, but I’m trying a lot of different options to treat her arthritis. Some have been more helpful than not, but we have an appointment for her to get an injection of RenoVo in her knee on Thursday.

RenoVo is just being studied for arthritis, it’s been effective for soft tissue injuries and sarcoids. I’m really hopeful that the injection will help her OA/DJD. It’s around the same price as PRP or IRAP but it’s made from cells in the placenta, an allograft.

I’m really hoping that it helps her!!!
Barefoot trimming has helped her a lot and so have a few of her medications. Pentosan injections help her too. She’s also on Equioxx, Cosequin ASU Plus and Osteo-Max.

Curious as to what has helped your horses with arthritis and whether you’ve tried RenoVo?

Many thanks!

I have not heard of this and have never had my sports med/lameness vet ever mention it. Only options for injections I was given are steroid with or without ha, IRAP, Prostride, Alpha Eq, stem cell, Noltrex or Arthrmid. I would try one of those first- specifically the Noltrex or Arthramid.

Oh, it’s an amnion product. Well, I can share that my people doctor laughed when I told him another provider suggested it (for me) and then listed the several ways why PRP was a superior product.

Given the long list of things with an actual track record of positive results, why would you go with something so experimental? If it were free, maybe, but if you’re spending the money, why not put it toward something that’s a bit more of a “sure thing”?

Here’s a link to the product page if anyone else is interested.

I know nothing of it except a vet offered it me along many other options like Prostride and PRP. I remember the price being similar so I went with Prostride.

Not really sure why the scorn, negativity and skepticism??? Did you have a negative response to it??

Part of my approaching my horses care is to approach things with an open mindset to new things available on the market and this product has shown superior results in arthritic studies and also with many soft tissue and sarcoids.

Yes, I could have definitely gone for tried and true but personally I want to try something more new and cutting edge.

I understand your concerns but you could at least be respectful, rather than rude

I’m not being rude. I’m sorry that’s the way you’re reading my post. My very own regenerative medicine specialist physician sees zero value in these packaged amnion products. You yourself stated this is “just” being studied in arthritis.

New is not automatically better. I’d consider how many horses have been treated with this vs the alternatives. Are you familiar with the concept of regression toward the mean? It’s very common that initial studies with small sample size and ideal candidates show promise that disappears in further study.

Good luck with your horse. I hope this helps her. This is not a product I would ever consider using, and I’d frankly question why a vet would suggest it over the far more proven options, especially if the price is comparable.

Thanks for explaining.

Personally, I understand your thoughts and opinions, thanks but my vet and I have decided otherwise.

Fortunately there are a lot of treatment options available, so if you’re looking for the “tried and true”- it is certainly available, but I have heard promising things about this product and am eager to try it. To each their own!

I’m not sure how something that shows effectiveness on soft tissue and sarcoids applies to overgrowth of bone on joints. Osteoarthritis is not considered inflammatory like rheumatoid arthritis. Speaking from personal experience there is an inflammatory component to OA but it doesn’t flare like RA which is an auto immune disease.

It’s always useful looking at what really works in humans. Often a lot of treatment that fails in humans or is still unproven gets marketed to horses. There is unfortunately no magic weapon for OA in humans.

I have not personally needed it for my own horses, but my performance vet used it on her own barrel horse, and horse is back to winning pro rodeos. And recommends it to clients when applicable.

I guess when it comes to arthritis, I don’t know of anything that is PROVEN. All horses are different and will respond differently.

I was always under the impression the Renovo was more for soft tissue injuries but I can see the “appeal” towards inflammation such as arthritis.

Let us know how it goes!

There’s a study going on now at The University of Oklahoma investigating RenoVo in arthritic joints in horses and the results have been promising.

Yes, you’re right that there is no “magic bullet” with arthritis. However, the goal of the RenoVo injection in my mare will be to decrease inflammation because that has been one of her biggest issues, she does actually have flares, despite it being OA/ DJD and not rheumatoid. One of the biggest challenges with my mare is she can easily get a flare brought on by being active in her field, the mud, stomping from flies in the summer, etc so if RenoVo can minimize her flares and decrease her inflammation, that would be awesome.

That’s great that it’s helped your vets horse!!
I always look when RenoVo posts new testimonials and I have seen that it has helped multiple barrel horses.

Thank you! I’m really excited and I’m hoping that it helps! Our appointment is this week!

Just curious how the Renovo worked and if it helped your mare.

Hi! The RenoVo has been AWESOME for my mare, Grace! It has really been a game changer for her.

Our vet took a few X-rays of her knee and that helped him guide the needle the most accurately, he actually did 2 shots in the 2 different areas of her knee that day.

I pretty much noticed an improvement right away! His office is about an hour drive away from the stables, when she got home, she saw her best friend, she firmly planted both front legs and bucked at him very highly, which was a huge surprise to me, my friends (his owners) and we not only had never seen her buck, but she bucked high. I think it was her way of saying that she felt really good!!!

I decided to stall her for two nights, following the Renovo and I didn’t notice any side effects other than a little bit of swelling, which went away within a few days.

I DID notice how much energy she had and how she seem to be feeling great!! I came out early one morning after she had been stall, and she was so eager to get out of her stall. We went to take a walk, and I immediately noticed that she was walking with a much more fluid and smooth motion without hardly a limp at all, which was such an improvement over her typical gait. I’ve stayed in touch with our veterinarian so I sent him a quick video, and I actually had Grace trot for just a few steps. I couldn’t believe it, I was taken aback, because for the first time ever since I’ve had her, she actually trotted a few steps without a limp.

I will say that the injection was in the first week of February and I think the first few days were absolutely her best days. Now that it’s towards the end of February, she still is doing great, and she still moves much more easily with much less of a limp and much less swelling around her knee. We used to use a Velcro ice pack very often for swelling, but since the Renovo, I hardly ever have the need to use it as often because she walks so much smoother and doesn’t limp as often. There has definitely been a minimization in the flares.

I have seen her trot a few times and while she sometimes does limp, which I think she pretty much always will at the trot, she does have much more energy which I’ve also seen when she’s bucked and also just seems like a much happier horse. I think that the pain that she had before the Renovo caused her to be more fatigued and I’ve seen her personality come out more now that she’s relieved of some of her pain.

I actually was really impressed by our veterinarian and the clinic where we went. I wish they were closer. I’m actually in the process of getting ready to move closer to Grace and as a long-term goal, I have thought about trying to move closer to this veterinary clinic because they gave her such excellent care. I personally think that I would like to come back to see this really great doctor by the end of the year for him to check up on her and perhaps give her another injection of Renovo in her affected left leg but also in her right leg, which has the very beginning of arthritis. So far nothing else has helped her as much as RenoVo. For me personally, my goal with Grace is never to ride her because of the extreme OA/DJD. For me, it is to give her the best possible quality of life with her condition, and to help improve her longevity and manage her arthritis to the best of my ability.

Hi again,

I just wanted to give another update re: my mare’s RenoVo shot.

She’s still doing great! We have started lightly jogging in hand together, which I never thought that I could have done with her before. We are going to work more in hand over thin ground poles again.

She saw her general vet the other day for spring shots who we haven’t seen since the fall for a lameness exam. She watched her walk and trot with no limp, a huge improvement from before.

I am also in touch with her specialist vet, a surgeon who treats her non operatively and I emailed him some pictures of her knees and legs. He was very pleased. There’s less swelling than there was before. We are going to wait on another injection in that knee right now but proceed with an injection of RenoVo in her other knee, which also has OA/ DJD. We’re hoping to inject that knee by the end of the summer. That knee isn’t as advanced with the OA/ DJD yet, so we would like to inject it before too long.

He has started using RenoVo with other equine arthritic patients, I think in many ways, thanks to Grace’s success with RenoVo!!! We were one of the first, if not the first arthritis case used with RenoVo by him at this practice, just after it was approved for arthritic use. I am very pleased and satisfied. I recommend it highly to others.

I recently had Grace injected again with RenoVo, both knees this time. Her vet saw a big difference since February! Her arthritis is STABILIZING, not worsening, which is great. The bone is starting to smoothen out and strengthen! Her lameness decreased from 4/5 to 3/5. We’re really pleased.

I recently used Regenaflex on a soft tissue injury, so far the horse is quite a bit more comfortable and I assume I’ll continue to see increased results as time passes. It’s an amnion product similar to the RenoVo.
