Hauke Schmidt Gloves - Worth the $$$?

I am starting to wear through the SSG Hybrid gloves I bought last summer, even though I was wearing some insulated Roeckl gloves during the colder parts of winter. The Roeckls were also new and are showing some wear. This despite only riding one horse consistently, and then my green horse for short/sporadic bits. Now my greenie should be getting into more serious work and I’d rather not be tearing through a pair of gloves every 3 months.

Looking at gloves today I started looking into the Hauke Schmidt Arabelle. They are $75 at Riding Warehouse, but that would be worth it if they last 2-3x as long as the SSGs. They have another model available through Dover that is supposed to be extra durable, but I was leaning towards the Arabelle due to shallow reasons of matching my brown boots. Any experience with these, or other suggestions for gloves that are actually durable, and preferably vented?

I am super hard on gloves (no idea how as I usually only have about 6 rides per week and don’t lunge in the gloves). SSG, Roeckl, and Heritage wore out way too fast for me, so I started buying cheap Noble Outfitters gloves. Not only are they inexpensive, but they actually last as long or longer than the more expensive one. Not sure if that’s what you are looking for, but the Noble Outfitters work for me and at $20, doesn’t hurt the wallet as much when they wear out.

I wore Neiman tackified batters gloves. Wore like iron. Save the spendy riding gloves for shows

Which glove do you use? I got a pair free with purchase last summer that were sort of a thin suede-ish fabric palm, and they almost seemed less protective than not wearing gloves.

See, I’m opposite. I would rather have a durable everyday glove and buy cheaper show gloves. The show gloves don’t need to be durable, and if they’re white, they’re going to get stained and turn into a pair of spare schooling gloves. Batters gloves are an interesting idea though!

Just trying to figure out if the HS or something else might be cheaper in the long run.

I have the tackified Ladies’ Finest from Haukeschmidt and I love them. They’re not my first choice in summer, but they’re super grippy and extremely durable, I think mine are now… 5 years old and still in great shape? Definitely a good choice if you like something all-leather and aren’t prone to losing gloves!

Also factor in how often you lose gloves…

the batters gloves are inexpensive and durable, Mine usually lasted at least 2 years. I think I usually lost one before they would be worn out. I always found show gloves a challenge. I have long fingers and womens gloves often didnt fit long enough. Mens gloves were often better fit and actually wore a bit better. I had a nice black and white pairs. Neumans usually fit me, I found Roeckels either too short or too flimsy

Thank you! Those looked nice, but I did notice the lack of ventilation, which is why I was leaning towards the Arabelle.

Any input on how they fit relative to SSG or Roeckl?

Yeah, they’re not what you want mid-summer but they’re my go-to if it’s not freezing or sweltering.

I find they fit quite true to size - haven’t worn SSG in an age but I’m a 6.5 in Roeckl and the Haukeschmidt.

Oh, thanks for the topic. It’s crossed my mind that i should buy some gloves, but never remember to. I’m small (5.0) but having worked with my hands all my life …i’ve got these amish-woman hands. Thick and muscular. I suppose i need a man’s glove. Think i’ll buy a pair of batting gloves and try to get used to wearing them to ride once in a while.

I work outside allll winter long, for hours at a time without gloves, so i definitely need to acclimate myself to their use if i intend to show. darn :frowning:
edit: ya know…i do use laytex gloves regularly, and they’re white, and i have boxes of ones that fit me well… and they will last five mins in the ring.

I have the Noble Outfitters Perfect Fit I think. I’ve usually been able to find them on sale around $20, but it looks like the price went up. I don’t need much “protection” from gloves as I’m usually riding with flat leather reins without stops. Honestly, these cheap gloves have lasted longer than pretty much any other pair I’ve tried.

When it gets chilly, I wear kids fleece gloves with the pimple palms. When winter really sets in, I switch to riding mittens.

I’ve been really happy with my MacWets, but they’re getting harder and harder to find.
