Don’t know why you want the tattoo (it is not easy to get), but if you just want to see their pedigrees here is how:

This is your filly’s. To see the other horse, just type his name in the box in the upper left.
If you want to know race record and trainer etc. You can get it for $8 at www.Equineline.com --Reports.
You can get the tattoo number/registration number. If you put in a tattoo identification request with the real name, dob, dam, and fill in the the markings section, they will send you the information. I did this a few weeks back for someone on the Eventing forum and it was easy peasy.
For the record, I called the JC and asked if this was against their rules and they said it was fine to do it this way. The reason you have to fill out the majority of the request is because they want to make sure you “know” the horse.
Thanks.
I am planning on showing them in a OTTB hunter division and the rules require us to either have the tattoo # or jockey club papers. When I bought them, the owners didnt want them to return to racing so they didnt give me the papers.

You can get a breakdown of their race record for free on Equibase. www.equibase.com (I know this doesn’t pertain to the tattoo, but in case you’re interested…)
Once the screen loads, in the upper right-hand corner is a green box with “Horse’s Name” in it. Delete that out and put in your horse’s name and hit enter. It will show who the last trainer was and the last jockey to ride them in a race. Lower down it will show the last race they started in and finish placement. You can click on “Show all results” and it will show their entire record. Depending on how good the info is, you can click on “Chart” next to the race and it will tell you the race info, order of finish, etc and possibly notes from the announcer about how the horse performed. Below the race records is another section that you can expand that breaks down their starts per year. For example, here’s one for the filly:

Since the person you bought them from has the papers could you contact them for the information or a photocopy of the papers?
Christa
Often the coggins going with the horse at sale time has the tatoo noted…In case you had a copy still…

the 2008 filly should be L18889 [Pa-Br, not BC-nom]
i could not find the spelling “Rangeling Rock” on the other, could the name really be [for Can-br, not BC-nom] Ranglin Road ? which is a bay gelding foaled 2004 - that would be H44035 … compare what you can see of the tattoos with those numbers … might help ya
My horses name is Prime Challenge he was born I believe 1999-2000 he will be 18 this month
He does have a tattoo on his neck I know it’s V something bit can’t make it out
Prime Challenge is a Standardbred, born 5/21/1999 in Nova Scotia. Sire is Happy Paysak, dam is Diana Royce. His freeze brand is V2566.
If someone could help me find out what my horse’s tattoo number is that would be amazing!
He is a dark bay OTTB named Tap My Shoulder. His sire is Green Dancer and his dam is Rescue Party. He was born in Virginia on April 20th 1987. I’m having difficulty reading it and finding it online.
Assuming you don’t have possession of his papers?
Does he have any white markings? Can you read any part of the tattoo at all? The letter would be Q but any readable digits would help.
His tattoo is extremely faded and too difficult to make out. As far as markings go, I’d have to look at an old picture of him. He doesn’t have an socks or spots, but he may have a small star. Its hard to tell now because he’s got grey hair between his eyes and behind his ears.
Bump!
Hi guys. I’ve literally been researching non-stop to figure out my OTTB’s number. And if I’m correct, from what my trainer-friends have told me and what I’ve deducted from the previous responses here, his number should be listed on his papers… no? He’s 17 and I cannot read his tattoo for the life of me.
I had little to no interest in my boy’s racing history until I started working at our local racetrack over the summer. And I have his papers, too… am I blind? Or just stupid?
Sorry for being SO ignorant. Don’t laugh at me if it’s easy to find. Hahaha.
Incase someone wants to just go ahead and save me the embarrassment and just tell me his number… his name is Signal Man, bay gelding, foaled Feb. 28 2000, of Signal Tap x Nicola Blue in New York.
THANK YOU to anyone who can help a poor girl!
Tattoo is the registration number with the letter corresponding to the YOB swapped out for the first two numbers. A 2000 born horse will have a reg # of 00##### and tattoo of D#####. So, if his registration number is 0012345, his tattoo is D12345.
The tattoo letter to year of birth rubric is here: https://www.registry.jockeyclub.com/…HelpDeskTattoo
Only those with (fairly rare) jockey club internal access can straight up just look up a tattoo with a name. The rest of us grind through the partial tattoo lookup engine with color and markings and just start at the yob and 00, looking for a markings match. It’s possible but time consuming.
Thanks!!
So that’s actually news to me, off to a good start! But should his registration numbers be on his papers? Because if that’s the case, then I can’t identify it. Hahaha.
So much to learn!
If your racing jurisdiction has a published Lasix List, as ours does here in Ontario, depending on the age of the horse, you can get the tattoo number from it, as long as the horse ran on Lasix. Makes things so much easier.
His number should be right at the top of the papers. It says “The Jockey Club” in big font and the next thing under that, inside the box, is the number. Below the number it says “Certificate of Foal Registration”
