Have to gush - I LOVE my horse!

I could go on and on about how much I love my senior Appendix QH, but my non-horse friends don’t get it. I took over full care of this boy in March of this year. He spent his life as a pasture potato that was ridden only once or twice a month from the time he was 8 years old. He did the same old tired trails and lived in the same valley his whole life, so when I had to move him to a boarding facility at 23 years old and wanted to turn him into a 3x/week trail horse that trailers, crosses water, and trail blazes, I though it was a pipe dream.

Well - I was wrong! My old man has been absolutely amazing with this big life change and has a new zest for life. He is full of energy, has put on weight, looks fantastic, and is known as the top trail horse at the barn that helps all the young bucks handle trail! I couldn’t be happier and just had to gush about it. It’s easy to get bogged down in the frustrations and cost of caring for a horse (I know I have a number of times over these last few months), but it’s also great to revel in the good times. We are all so lucky to get to ride and care for horses - it’s a dream come true!

You are so lucky!! And he is, too, because he now has a BFF in you! :):encouragement:

My first horse was an Appendix QH. She ended up being my heart horse, and still stands #1 of all the horses in my life. She could do anything, and was the kindest, SWEETEST horse on the planet. Taught me so much, and was happy to do whatever I asked. Truly a gift that has never been equaled.

That is awesome! They really do seem to be a great breed. Red is high energy and so much fun, but takes really good care of me. Lucky is definitely right!

Non horse people just don’t get it do they? They are truly the great loves of our lives. Sigh.

Non-horse people don’t get it, but that’s why you have us! Isn’t it wonderful when you find your heart horse? I wish you and your boy many happy years together!

Sounds like he knows he was missing out on all the fun the past years, and is making it up by having enjoying the trail, being a good boy, and just making you happy! Love it.

yes, you can gush all you want. You took the chance and ended up being a happy rider with a happy horse. Lots of trail riding for you in the future. Enjoy

The older horses have so much to give!! And, apparently, so does the OP. So happy the two of you have found each other, and found so much fun together.

Thank you everyone! It’s such a nice feeling and great to have people who understand. I talk about him at length to non-horse friends and get the polite smile and nod, lol. I obviously need more horse friends!

I love this thread! Thank you for starting it, Horsecare101.

I feel sure that your Red has been texting on his Hooftop to all his pasture pals that he just can’t keep quiet about his wonderful new human friend who takes him on real rides and real trails. I am glad y’all found each other!

And somewhere across the Rainbow Bridge another Red (greatest trail horse/hunter on the East Coast) is cantering up on Rainbow Ridge flagging his tail with joy at another match made in heaven.

Happy trails!
