Have you seen this whip?

My favourite jump whip needs to be replaced, and I can’t find what I want. Maybe you all could help?

(What I don’t want is a Fleck, or other stiff, thick whip.)

I’m looking for a thin whip, with a rubber-grip handle (spiraling), and a slightly wider knob on top. The popper is thin flexible leather. I can find all these things separately in a whip, but not together! Photos of what I want:

Grip/knob

Here is the leather end I like.

Obviously, it needs to be under 30" - I think mine was 27 or 28".

And, I want it in navy

http://shop.shiresequestrian.com/p/plain-stem-whip and a whopping $9.99

Is this popper too thick?

What about this one?

Or if you don’t mind spending $$$ to get exactly what you want…

And from a thread earlier today…

Thanks! I don’t want to spend $100 on a whip, which is funny since I am so particular about it, right?

But I might be able to make do with one of the ones you posted!

Check out MWR whips. My driving whip is light and beautiful.

I prefer the name “stick”. Less connotations.

You are a race track person, Gumtree.

Stick and Whip can, for some people, be considered something to beat a horse with, but we have Whiper-ins, or Whips, on the hunt field and the ‘whip’ is only used to crack, direct or position hounds. We have dressage whips, because they have a certain amount of whip in them, meaning flexible. No fear involved, just a touch for a reminder. A stick would indicate rigid as with a side-saddle rider…

But, it is like the word ‘submission’ in a dressage test. We need another word without the connotations…don’t you think?

The Jock’s shop at Hastings might be able to get you one custom made with your exact directions. I think the guy who makes them for the track is in Kelowna, or was. But then it would be up there in price, too. Something special.

lol, yes I am a TB person, But if you came by my farm I think you would find more “sport” horses than racehorses.

I am told I breed nice horses. Just wish they were fast horses. Fast horses pay the freight for the slow but nice sport horses.

I’d rather be “sticked” than “whipped”.

Thanks for the banter

I like this whip a lot, because it doesn’t seem to sting, and has a nice balance. It is used primarily along the shoulder or for a tap behind the leg, with occasional stronger use when needed. I have small hands so those big-grip whips used by jockeys and event riders are just too big for me. I fumble things.

In our household the colloquial term is “beater,” whose connotations are even worse than whip, I guess. It’s a joke, and used most often when we’ve forgotten our beater and need to break off a willow branch to do the job. I just always make sure that I tell people I train with love

I grew up calling them ‘bats’.

Isn’t a bat that short little thing that jumpers use?

Yep. They’re the short little crops, usually a pretty big topper on the handled and the wide ummm slapper? We always called it a “pony bat” when I started riding because the size seemed to fit better on a pony than a regular sized crop. Most looked like this one http://www.doversaddlery.com/county-international-bat-in-brown/p/X1-1417/

I like these for daily use…but doesn’t look like they come in navy…and I’ve broken a few xc schooling on a stopper. :uhoh:

I do have smaller hands but I still like my jockey stick.

That is why I think the custom made one by the jockey’s whip maker might work -
I had a couple made and I have weak hands.

Ok all you racetrackers. I had a whip years ago that I LOVED. It got lost after XC and I haven’t been able to replace it. it was 18-20" long with a tapered textured rubber handle maybe 5/8 dia. on the shaft end and 3/4 or more at the other end. The thing is that the shaft and the popper were also rubber (although the shaft must have had some fiberglass inside to keep it from being too whippy: this was pretty stiff). When I bought it it was called a jockey’s whip.

Anyone seen one/ know where I can get a replacement?

You can get Jockey Whips a few places:

Thanks, bfne, but those aren’t it. The one I’m looking for was all one color (mine was black, but I know someone who had a gray one). It was as if they were made of rubber that was poured into a mold: they appeared to be all one piece, popper and hand grip included. No stitching. All smooth except for the handle which had a pimple texture sort of like rubber reins.

Never seen that one. This one looks squishy.
