Having a great time riding an ex broodmare

I have way too many broodmares this year. So rather than breed one of them I decided to ride her. She is the mother of 3 lovely foals by Don Principe.
And I am amazed at what a super ride she is! It gonna be hard putting her back into the broodmare band after this. I might just have to keep on riding her!
I was always told that once they were broodmares their riding careers were very limited, but wow this little mare is amazing.

BTW she’s by Pegasus V. Niehaus-Hof the Knabstrupper stallion that Diane Truxillo stands.

She has such nice gaits and natural balance, I can;t say I regret having bred her, but boy I did miss out on some nice riding. But no matter I will just keep on now I know.

So watch out for Peony v Falkenhorst in the show ring later on this year!

how fun! Both my horse and I came back from being broodmares too this last year LOL

Good luck!

Why can’t you ride her and breed her? If she likes it, she’ll probably thrive.

I bought my mare at eight, greenbroke after having had three foals. I started really teaching her and bred her within 6 months. In the five years I’ve had her she’s had two more foals and progressed from a badly greenbroke horse to solid 4th ready to go PSG. She is MUCH easier to ride pregnant, and last foal I showed her 3rd level when she was 7 months, and I start riding her a few weeks after foaling and have shown her 2 1/2 months after the baby.

Keep riding her AND breeding her. Hm. Sounds like some foals I want. Any for sale? Too bad you’re so far from me. I’m missing spots.

I’d love to see some video of her because I’ve thought of breeding to Pegasus, but there are no videos of his get. Please?

One of my best mares is back under saddle after having five foals. This was a mare who lived to be ridden and shown. She would drag me to the trailer when were were headed out to a show or clinic. She’s taken to work as if she never skipped a day. If horses can grin, she’s grinning, as is the lady who is borrowing her.:D:yes:

I’d like to know how you manage that? I mean, fitness-wise? A mare that’s been out of work for close to three months must “loose” some time getting back into shape to show again, no?

That’s what I want to do with my mare, if she’s good with my plan, but I am not sure if it makes sense or if I’d always be starting back at square 1 post-foaling…

Equus—She never really get out of fit. Of course, it’s not like I’m going right back to GP. With the first foal I had with her she was never fit to start, so I had six months of conditioning her, then pregnant, and about seven more months. I probably “rode” her until 9/10 months, though not much in the end–just what she wanted to do.

I think the first pregnancy I put half passes and changes on her. By the second one (with me) I put pirouettes and started piaffe work. So, you are right, she wasn’t doing much of any work for three months or so, but once a horse is conditioned, that’s not a lot of down time. Of course she’s in pasture and can do running around as she likes (and she would run like a wild woman at 11 months!)

I guess it depends on the horse. This mare needs a LOT to do. The only other horse I bred was my GP mare when she was four, and I was just starting her, too. Again, it wasn’t really an issue.

I would give it a try with your mare and see how it goes. You KNOW she’ll tell you whether it’s OK or not. I think you might be surprised how easy it is, and how NICE it is to ride them with all of the happy hormones surging. I mean, in the wild, they have babies and go right back to the same work, so it should be a normal thing for them.

Thank you for your insight! Mine’s a full TB, probably the type that gets fit in no time and keeps it well… We’ll see.

The main reason I didn’t breed her

is because I have 6 mares in foal, and I really don’t need 7 foals. She is a blast to ride. I can’t wait til her daughter gets old enough to start under saddle.
I will get you a video of her. It won’t be this week because we have Dressage at Lexington starting tomorrow. but next week I will.
You should call Diane, she has a drop dead gorgeous daughter of Pegasus out of a warmblood mare for sale right now. It’s full leopard, and stunning! She’s 2 yrs old so next year you could start her. If she wasn’t in California I’d be picking her up myself. These Pegasus daughters have the nicest temperaments and such good canters!

Go take a look at her, the price is right as well.

Well, Melyni, you could breed her and send her to me!

I saw that two year old you were talking about on your site. I am in CA, so it makes it better, but she has nothing on her site updated for two years. I’ve tried to get more video of Pegasus before and couldn’t get any. Sigh, maybe I’ll contact her. I won’t start them until 4, so it’s two more years for me.I don’t know the price is. It’s not like I need a 4th horse!

Hm. Someone asked if the said mare was for sale last weekend at a show. Hm. Sell the 4th level mare, have one 4 year old riding, and two two year olds. I don’t know this is a good idea. But . . . spots!

YOU should

Contact Diane and go see that filly. She has spots! And if her sisters are anything to go by, she’s gonna be a great ride! I am having way too much fun to send you Peony, sorry and all that, but she is a blast.
