Hi guys! I know there are 87 million trailer threads on these boards, and trust me, I think I have read through about 90% of them I am just looking for some up-to-date opinions about trailers…I have been researching and shopping and scanning through ads for about 2 months now in search of my first trailer. I’m looking for a 2H bumper pull with dressing room, and from the research I’ve done, the Hawk model seems to fit the bill really well.
From what I understand, they are very similar to the Equispirit (I have friends who have this trailer and they like it, and the horses seem to as well) and the reviews I’ve read have been pretty favorable. I found a 2004 model for sale ($9500) within driving distance and it looks really well maintained–lady is only selling due to not needing two trailers. So I guess before I make the commitment to drive up there and see for myself, I wanted to ask COTH: Do you still like your Hawk trailers? Would you recommend them to a friend? Any qualms about an older but well-kept model? I don’t need fancy–my planned excursions would be 2-5 hours away most likely no more than once a month (ie, I don’t plan to haul from OH to FL or anything long-distance like that). Any advice for new trailer owners is also appreciated My coach has been hauling my horse for years and I am familiar with the basics of trailer safety, etc, but I’m always open to advice. Thanks in advance!
I have owned a 2H BP Hawk for about 8 years I LOVE this trailer. Ramp is easy for one person to lift, there are multiple window/vent combinations you can use, escape doors on each side, easy to clean, tack room just big enough for 2 of us. I have slept in the horse area at night comfortably. You could probably sleep in the tack room, but I’m one of those prepare for every possibility types, so I have trunks of stuff in there. I recommend them to anyone who asks. I was very lucky to get this trailer from a guy who was anal about keeping records, and cleaning the thing after every use. I drove thru a snowstorm in January to get it, or it would probably have been already gone. Don’t hesitate to buy one.
I had one for awhile and liked it a lot.
Mine is a 2004 and still going strong.
Check the weatherstripping around the rear doors, and check the springs on the ramp. Those are the only things I have had problems with.
I have had a 2000 Hawk 2H BP (which is now for sale, but has no dressing room), and now have a 2018 Hawk 2+1. The original 2000 is still in excellent shape. The floor is as solid as it ever was, and it really still looks and functions well. I did have to replace the ramp wood a couple of years ago, and one escape door needs to be locked while moving or it tends to pop open. I have been very pleased with this trailer for the 18 years I’ve owned it, including lots of local travel, and about one really long trip per year. I had no qualms about looking to Hawk again when I was ready to upgrade to something bigger.
If you find you need to do a little upgrading on it, like the weatherstripping, parts are readily available here: http://www.hawktrailers.com/store/
I have a 2006 XXL BP 2H with dressing room. I custom ordered mine and would happily do so again, even if money were no object and I could have any brand I liked. Actually I would like a new one, it’s lost that new trailer smell LOL
You can’t go wrong with a Hawk!
Very good trailers. I have a 2H bumper pull with dressing room, similar to what OP wants, 2009 model and just love it. One unexpected feature: in hot weather, it stays about 10 degrees below the outside temperature.
What I would change: better hardware on the escape doors and a slightly different hitch design
OP, do get the trailer checked out by someone knowledgeable about horse trailers before you buy, if possible. If the trailer has been sitting, there may be some maintenance needed.
I love my Hawk - I ordered mine new in 2014 and don’t have a single complaint…other than wanting living quarters.
They are definitely quality trailers, but I probably wouldn’t pay $9,500 for a 14 year old steel 2H BP trailer, even if it were immaculate.
I’ve had a 2 H Straight load GN Hawk for many years, love it. It’s a 2005 and had very low miles when I got it, maybe in 2010? I do regular maintenance on it, but it has held up great. I think I paid $8500 for mine. I use it year round, haul once or twice weekly all winter (very northern, terrible wintry climate). It lives outside and also hauls hay about once a month. In addition to my own horses I haul student horses a lot and everyone loves it.
Thanks so much for all the input guys! The used trailer I had in mind sold, but I plan to keep an eye on sale ads until I hopefully see another one. It’s good to hear that people still like the ones they have. I don’t need a trailer ASAP, but I am hoping to buy sometime in late spring/early summer. May or may not need to relocate my horse in August or September, so I want to feel 100% comfortable and competent driving it before then. Life changes are so much fun…NOT
I love my Hawk except for one thing. The paint job. It’s a 2008 I bought new and the paint started peeling off after about 3-4 years. They priced it as several thousand to repaint. Check the paint on the one you are considering. Mine is not stored indoors but really shouldn’t have started peeling like this. I was even able to get the county to reduce the value for taxes based on the paint. Hauls nice though.
Twisted… Check your PM’s

I have a 2007 Hawk and love it. It’s a bit heavy, but pulls well and as held up really well. If you do look at is, make sure the tires are newer regardless of how much use they have had. Any tire over 5 years old needs to be replaced whether used a lot or not.
My Hawk is super but that sounds pricey for a 2004 unless it is basically brand new/like new condition. Maybe even then.
We have a 2 horse, straight load, warmblood, rumber floor, goose neck Hawk with some customization (bed in the goose neck, screen door, running boards). We bought it used for $17,000 Cdn 5 years ago. It is roughly 12 years old now and we have had no issues. It’s still in great shape.
Not sure what model you are looking at but comparing prices at $17,000 Cdn for a 7 year old customized trailer versus $9,500 US for a 14 year old model, it may be a bit overpriced.
Nice trailers though and we love ours.
I love my Hawk! I have a 2H BP slant load with dressing room. My only complaint is that it gets hot in the summer and I have to keep scrim sheets on the horses to keep their sides off the vinyl padding of the dividers. Other than that - it is a super trailer. Lots of room to work out of in the DR, and the horses ride very comfortably.
Price seems high for a trailer that old.
I got a new trailer but last year’s model from a Hawk dealership late last autumn for about $14,000. I had to drive hours for it but it’s brand spanking new w/ a dressing room and rumbar flooring and hauls like a dream. My previous trailer was a Kingston w/ dressing room that I got for around $7000 when it was 12 years old. It lasted another 8 years before frame rot killed it.
14 years old for $9500? Way too expensive.
I just sold a 2002 Hawk 2 horse straight load with dressing room & ramp, aluminum skin over steel frame, wood floor (with mats) for $6500. This first day I had it listed. And had three more people who wanted it.
I actually sold it for more than I paid for it about 6ish years ago. IME Hawk trailers really hold their value. The only issues I had with mine stemmed entirely from user error before I owned it - think a small amount of fiberglass damage from not paying attention when they were backing up. I did have to re-weatherstrip the ramp. but really - that was the only repair I ever had to do to it. Oh, and the rims had some surface rust. Nothing that affected the integrity of the tires at all.
