Hi all. Have two metabolic ponies. I need to get both hay and grass analyzed.
Where do you have your testing done and re care of metabolic horses, what testing do you have done?
thanks,
J

I’m not in New England but I use Equi-Analytical. They’re located in New York and you just mail the samples to them. I normally use the (601) Equi-tech test
Yup, equi-analytical. They’re great!
601 is the one I was looking at, but then saw 644 (carb pak)
Is 601 adequate re wanting to know carb type and so forth?
It gives: WSC, ESC, Starch, and NFC. I have an IR horse and have been using this one for 6 or 7 years.
They’ll send you a kit for sending your sample in including a self addressed prepaid envelope.
Did you check with U Mass Amherst? They do soil samples and I wonder if they’ll offer this service. They have a large agriculture college and I would start there.
I live in New England and also use Equi-Analytical. One year I did have my feed rep run one for me, but I’m so fickle with what I feed I feel guilty about doing that.
The turn around time at EA has always been quick for me this time of the year, once they get it. I just mailed mine on Thursday, can’t wait to see the results.
Totally agree! I’m mailing a couple on Monday and can’t wait to see. It’s like Christmas!
Another plus with Equi-Analytical is the result loads directly into FeedXL, no need to wait for the peeps on the backend to manually enter. Handy if you’re interested in using FeedXL!
What do you all test?
Has anyone tested pasture at different times of day?
I test hay. Pasture is way too variable depending on temp, season, time, location, etc etc etc for me to feel there is any value in testing. YMMV.
Right … Which is why I want to test … See the difference based on season, time of day etc. Take samples at different times. Cutting a various times including for hay will be a factor.
