Hay Bag for Alfalfa

I’ve got some great alfalfa that is very leafy. When I trailer out & tie to the trailer, I typically give my guys haybags hanging. With this alfalfa, so much drops out onto the ground.

I am looking for a hay bag option that is in closed on 3 sides(or so) & won’t allow all this wonderful hay to fall out - probably with a slow feeder area. We end up wasting so much when we leave because I can’t take the scraps with me.

I’m contemplating the hay play hay bags, the blue ones with round holes - in the square shape, but they seem really large for what I need, so other options - or have you tried them for alfalfa? What type have you had the most success for nice leafy alfalfa?

Thanks!

Take a look at the nibble nets:

I like using buckets for alfalfa like that. You could rig up a net over the bucket if you need to slow them down!

Following because I have the same issue while trailering. I hate the feed bags that fit in my trailer; they’re cumbersome and a pain to take down so I can reach to untie a horse. Though they do catch the hay that falls out of my nets. I really don’t like the enclosed bags that they have to put their nose in to eat.

The nibble net posted above doesn’t look to have a solid bottom.

You didn’t say what type trailer you have. For my two horse bumper pull I put the alfalfa in soft mangers clipped to the chest bar and front trailer wall. After arriving at my destination I tie the horses to rings on either side just next to the full size side doors, and they can continue nibbling out of the mangers from outside, see each other, and can also pick up any bits that fall on the trailer floor inside the doors. I did this for twenty years before and after fox hunts without any problems.

If for some reason I need to get into the front of the trailer it’s easy to just release a couple of the snaps that hold up the mangers.

You could even put a slow feed hay pillow into the manger. I never have.

This looks like it would work

I had the same issue. I usually just use a bucket while tacking up. In the trailer I have a slow feed bag inside a regular hay bag like LCDR posted.

I haven’t tried it but I think something like this would work pretty well too https://www.thedistancedepot.com/Black_Mesh_Hay_BagsTrail_Rite_s_Mesh_Hay_Bag_p/tr-mhb.htm
