Hay hoop-stupid mistake

We hung up hay hoops and they were wonderful - until the little toggle gadgets that actually keep them closed began to not work. So- we just sawed the metal tubing piece off the top. For some horses, that works fine. Others have figured out how to open them. I’ve tried double ended snaps tied to the stall barns, which sort of works. I bought the Hay Chix quick closers which don’t work well because the hoop part is too thin to fit well into the closure. There is a ton of play there. Does anyone have an idea what to do? I don’t want to replace them if I don’t have to….:woman_facepalming:

I am not familiar with that system - is it possible you can snap some pictures? May get some clever suggestions if we (g) can better envision the problem.

Good idea! I will- thank you!

I had a hard time getting this to load. It’s not a very clear picture. I did just have the idea of a very large chip clip type of gadget.

Would this work? I didn’t come up with the idea, just did some googling and this is the closure system that is used for the K-bale Easy Load haynet system.

If that wont work, maybe look into the clamps that they sell to hang mops on the walls etc.

What a great idea! Thank you- I’ll follow up on this.

My first thought was one of these bucket brackets with the drop in pin. Not sure about the depth / size of the metal hoop but it could potentially be less finicky than the toggle! https://www.cheshirehorse.com/p/little-giant-metal-wall-bucket-bracket-hanger/12777-1.html

This is a great idea, too!!! It sure looks like it would work.

It doesn’t look like the K bale site sells the closure separately.

You could buy a barrel bolt latch and use the upper part. You would need a drill bit for metal and create the hole in the top bar of the net for the barrel to slide into.

That is a great idea!

You’ve all given me great ideas and a different way of looking at this. Thank you!

I’d think that you could also use a double ended snap clipped to the wall, but instead of clipping one one end to the wall and one to the hoop, clip the SAME end to the wall AND the hoop to keep the hoop closer to the wall.

If the snap isn’t big enough to accommodate both, a small carabiner could do it (opening away from the horse) or just a larger snap.

This is a great idea. I think I’ll order the gizmo from Big Dee’s above and clip the snap to the attachment the ring is hanging from.

I hope the DIY guy will take back the $24.00 latches I bought that didn’t work.

Fwiw I far prefer this sort of dealie over the tie ring from Big D you have pic of above, just because it lies flat. I’m allergic to stuff in the stall that sticks out :joy:

(I don’t think brand really matters, I have em from wherever.)

The ring itself is also smaller with these, so your hoop will sit closer to the wall

I have a couple of these in each stall for hanging nets. They work great.
