Hay trailer for ATV/UTV

We just got a brand new Case Scout XL. I’m beyond excited because it’s a huge upgrade from our always-dying-never-made-for-farmwork Kawasaki Mule.

Currently, to feed hay in the pastures, we (get this) load small bales into the manure spreader and “spread” the hay in the pastures. It is so wasteful, and the huge tractor destroys the pastures.

With the new UTV, I want to use it to feed in the pastures. I want to switch to box feeders similar to this: http://www.grazingbox.com/slow%20hay%20feeder%202x4%20open.jpg. But we will need a trailer to help hold more hay. It already has a receiver for a hitch.

Any suggestions? We’re a non-profit so inexpensive is good, but not at the risk of longevity.

Just put your own deck on it.

I don’t have any advice for a hay cart (but the poster above looks like a good option). However, I would recommend making PVC haynet hangers instead of the boxes you have linked above. I had the boxes before and the horses wore their teeth down on the grates and constantly pulled the grate out. Big PITA. Then I built these haynet hangers at the start of this winter and they are great!! Have held up well, super cheap and easy to build, no filling/ hanging nets…just toss in the hay and go.

If you do not have a shed to put them in there, here is one someone built for a fence line.

How many bales do you want to carry, and what’s the terrain like?

We use a trailer like this: http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/ProductDisplay?catalogId=15052&storeId=10001&langId=-1&division=FarmTek&productId=20295

We put a big square bale on it and drive around to our horse pens. We have never had a problem pulling ours but your fields and terrain could be different.

7-11 35 lb bales between the vehicle and trailer. Terrain is slightly hilly pasture with some mud and some snow throughout the year.

Thanks for the idea Blume Farm! Unfortunately that won’t work for us (we don’t have good fence line for it, yet another project), but I really appreciate your feedback on the boxes. I may have to search for a better option.

We use an old jet ski trailer as our utility trailer. We just took the skids off and made a base for it, hands down the handiest thing to have around.

This picture was from our fencing project last year, we put a generator and paint sprayer/stainer on it and it made staining 200+ wood post an easy job.

I have a 5x8 trailer that i bought years ago on craigslist for a few hundred bucks.

I can get ~30 bales on it and pull it (carefully) with my large ATV.

Avoid harbor freight trailers. They are awful.
