Hay Where's That Blue Stuff - Anyone use it?

The website has good reviews of course, but I’m curious if anyone has actually used it and if they had good results.

I’m losing the battle of chronic scratches and, as we all know, there are approximately 654,687,123 different treatments for them.

I have had the most success with a mixture of furazone, desitin and DMSO but it does not get rid of them completely.

My guy is old and we have been dealing with them on and off for the past few years, but this time I can’t completely get rid of them. We moved to a drier area so he’s no longer always in mud like he was when they started.

The ingredients are herbal extracts in witch hazel, with a fairly standard list of emulsifiers. And at the end, chlorhexidine gluconate at 2 %, which is presumably the active ingredient, as it turns up in other recommendations for treating skin problems. Indeed, in this old COTH thread:

If you haven’t tried chlorhexidine yet in your seach for a solution, this product might be useful, or you could just buy chlorhexidine at the pharmacy. I have some on hand for wound treament.

I did read on other threads here that at certain point, scratches can become a systemic chronic infection, especially on older draft horses with feathers, and be almost impossible to knock out with topical treatment.

Good point that I didn’t mention. I scrub w/ Chlorhexidine shampoo and let it sit for about 10 min, rinse, dry legs as much as possible, then put on the concoction.

And thanks for that link. I didn’t see it when I tried searching.

ETA: Not sure of the percentage chlorhexidine in the shampoo. I got it at the LSU Vet School for my other horse when they thought he had a skin allergy (which turned out to be a reaction to a few wasp stings! So I re-purposed it for the scratches)

I got a few free samples, and liked that it seemed to be moisturizing and didn’t have a foul smell. However, I have not needed to use it on anything serious yet (Thankfully)
However, when I had my battle with scratches I used this and it took care of them in about 2 weeks. https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=fe9d4542-395e-466c-84a5-6fd72d597454 I think you need a prescription though.

My friend has a Friesian cross that suffers from frequent bouts of scratches. She recently bought the blue stuff and seems to be having good results with it for her mare.

I use Equiderma for my stallion that had chronic scratches, came to me with them, and I was fighting them for over a year. You apply it to clean dry skin and rub it in and leave it in. In 24 to 48 hours the scratches were almost gone and after a week of treating every other day it is totally gone. Now I use the No Thrush powder once a week, sometimes more if it is unusually wet, as a preventative. Love both products.
